If it's scaring him, breaking his spirit and making him hate climbing then well done. If you were hoping he would have fun, get some exercise and develop a love of this fantastic activity, may I suggest you let him explore the walls, do what he is comfortable with and give him some positive feedback for all the effort he is putting in. [I didn't say this but I made my point by giving the poor kid some praise and showing some enthusiasm]
