Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

You'll know what you need to do differently to get the square next time, Elsie Too ;)

(I trespassed on a track that looks like a path but is private property last night to try to get a square. Missed it. Tried again this morning, in daylight. Missed it again. But I now have a landmark for how far I need to go next time.)

I think next time I’ll stay dry and accept that it’s a 29 square run!

NDWDave, that's exactly what the Elo system does. It models the probability of each result and exchanges points on the basis of the liklihood of the result that actually happens.

I guess the question is how does it translate the into WSW? What are the odds of beating someone with 30 points higher rating for example

People choose to play the game.

If they choose to play it so often and play it so hard they are in the top dozen and end up playing each other then that is their look out and they have no right moaning about it.

If fact repeated match ups occur further down too.

Getting trashed today! Still I was off grid mostly. Nature if the game.

Hey ho!

Sorry WS. I am in perfect WSW territory this week, a US town with a near north-south grid system.

I know this started as a test but Fetch has to draw a line and say "this is it"; no more fannying about. I've been playing conquersize for ages and the beauty is the simplicity.

There will be features in any game that favour a training style or a location. We cannot please everyone and every reshuffle will disadvantage someone else.

+1 ITG and WS

I would benefit from moving the location twice a week as I run at work during the week and at home at the weekend but that is the way the game is set up. I just have to do more with my weekday runs.

Whilst repeating matches might be dull, will the top dozen enjoy games where their opponents “only” score 30-40 and there is no real competition? I normally visit 70-100 squares each week a few times which would usually result in a heavy tonking by the top 6 or so

I think there are always little changes to all of the games, and some of the changes to WSW recently have been simplifications eg removing the double points rule. 39 people voted for the option to avoid playing people too regularly - so there must have been quite a spread of rankings behind that. And the changes I’ve made to the multiplayer eligibility (removing sub-1000 scores and taking into account whether the user is interacting with the game) are there to help lowly ranked players with an interest in participating.

The new ‘avoid last ten opponents’ aspect of matching is going to prove interesting, but my gut feeling is that it’s not going to change much. The new rule means that players 2-11 all get a crack at player 1 over a ten week period - and if they’re good enough to beat those players, then they deserve to be top. And the bigger the gap between two opponents, the bigger the reward for a minnow win.

All in all, I’m mostly really pleased that you lot are very much invested in the tactics and gameplay. I hope it shows that we have an exciting game here - and it’s steadily getting a bigger audience I think.
