Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Hi allmathew - have you heard the Fetch expression "taperitis"? The worries and phantom niggles that you get during tapering for a goal race? It's a recognised condition. It even has an icon

slowdownyoumovetoofast (it's a Tapir, if that isn't clear).

You'll be fine, stick to your plan, and as you say, don't exceed your planned pace and have a great time. :-) G

Yellow is the separate, segregated front bit of red, also known as Fast GFA. When I was there it was full of sub-3 blokes who weren't quite fast enough for champs start but too fast to be made to start behind all the celebs on green. And me. I've never worked out why I was there rather than with the rest of the GFA women on green but it's nice to have the full set of starts :-)

allmatthew - everything you describe, all the niggles, aches, tiredness etc are all a perfectly normal sign of taper madness. It's more worrying when you don't get them! Good luck, and most importantly, enjoy. Remember, it's supposed to hurt - if it was easy everyone would be doing it!

Good luck allmatthew - Chester doesn't have the bells and whistles of London but it is (usually!) a very well organised event that lets you be as relaxed and prepared as possible before the gun goes. PLastic overshoes sometimes a good idea for walking over the race course area to the start if you don't want soggy trainers to set off in.

Don't overdo things heading up into the town centre from the start.

Enjoy these few days of being fit and rested, run if you want to, rest if you want to, and set off with a plan that you can stick to. Then enjoy what you can and suffer through the rest!

Thanks all - the reassurances are helpful and if all goes to plan I'll have a decent story to tell on Sunday evening!

Yeah good luck London, Chester, Loch Ness marathons and Glasgow half - enjoy and be thankful participating. We are so lucky as per Lou's wise words (Vics and Dundee did well today at XC btw Lou. No Stoosh, Baz P, Tizer etc tho?!) :-) G

Looking forward to the action today with assorted fetches across different pace bands in various races

1:38 for my solo half this morning. Pretty even paced and HR was well within the boundaries I used to race at so suggest I could go faster. I did start to struggle towards the end, partly as I was fasted and so running low on fuel and the last three miles were into the wind.
