Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I might not be attempting 3:15 any more but I'll still be going as fast as my broken body will allow - it'll be my 16th London in a row (not including the 2020 virtual).

This year marks a mini milestone for me too - I've run from champs blue, normal blue, green and yellow starts. This year I'm going from red to complete the full set :-)

That's an amazing record KinkyS. I didn't even realise there was a yellow start. Never give up - you might get back to sub 3:15 shape again.

The site has always fluctuated with popularity of different races, though to be fair London was always popular. Might this year's London being in Autumn, a hangover from Covid, just be the reason?

Abingdon got crazy busy for a couple of years, because RD was Last of The Time Lords, and the likes of Gobi and Kinky raced there. And sociable people like santababy, Puddington and others used to have people flock to whatever they were doing. Edinburgh marathon had a Fetchpoint for many years, all down to sants.

Hopefully the new, young Fetchies will find and promote their own favourites. :-) G

my races this year

name, 2022 FE entrants, 2012 FE entrants

Maidenhead 10, 11, 55
Burnham Beeches HM, 2, 26
Fleet HM, 12, 42
Wokingham HM, 23, 100
Farnborough HM 10, 17 (2017 race not run before then)

I'm no statistician but I spot a trend

Comparing with 2017

MH 10 - 17 (11 this year)
Burham - 14 (2 this year)
Fleet - 25 (12 this year)
Wokingham - 23 (same as this year)

So definitely down, but the big drop was from 2012 to 2017 maybe?

Things wax and wane, people use different sites and do different things. There’s a decent number of sub-3ers this year but that does include a couple of 2:45 refugees.

Maybe the running bubble has burst, but I reckon it’s more likely people just got out of the habit during covid and things may pick up again. Or else maybe people will find something else to do instead.

Thanks, Rog T. I'll not lie, I'm very nervous about it all. It's my first proper marathon and I've had a few wobbles in taper with random aches and pains (none of them bad enough to seemingly change the way I run or stop me getting to the start line, but it's been an interesting experience nonetheless!).

I'm trying to focus on just enjoying the race, not going out too fast, and using this as a marker for Manchester in 2023. If it all goes perfectly, I'll probably be on this forum minutes after crossing the finish line. If it doesn't, it might take me a bit longer to explain all!

Matthew - the deal is that you come back here come what may! I don't do good luck messages as I'm pretty sure it's all about decent execution on the day once you've trained well. So, just go out and do your job for the day! It's perfectly natural to be nervous, to not sleep much the night before, to feel sluggish, to niggle everywhere. The relief when you take those 1st few strides over the starting mat will be massive and after that it's just cruise control until 20ish miles when it's then just all in, logs on the fire, gritted teeth and a realization that everyone around you is hurting too.

Oh the scenes of the last miles of the mara, I almost miss it.

I should have recognised KS' achievement there too. That is a phenomenal record.

BR - I think that yellow was the front bit of red, perhaps it used to be called FGFA in the old days. I reckon you've been on there in the past tbh!
