How do I "know" it was the best line? I spent an hour one evening checking out the various options. Was quite fun ![]() |

Splitting hairs a bit there Fozzy. I know you're an orienteer and all that, but I can think of other places on that route where selection of best line is more critical!

DT - that's a good question. I don't think it's been an LDWA event for some years, though there does seem to be a loose affinity, certainly LDWA members get a discounted entry and this year the only place to find the entry form was on the LDWA website, the Rombalds Stride website is very out of date. It's now ran by the local scout group. Similar analogy to what the Hebden 22 now is, though the H22 advertises itself as a race, Rombalds doesn't. |

Quickest line is the quickest line, NE. But yes, there are a few others that are important (although not as many as there used to be) From looking on |

The bit at the bottom is the crucial bit for me! Don't get lost! But, more seriously, Yes, I have no problem with the concept of having some form of GPS as required kit. The problem with his scenario is that not everyone will have an OS maps app with the correct route installed. And trying to navigate off road by Google maps isn't a great idea... |

True - no point in having technology if it's not usable. Lots of interesting angles to this ongoing debate, I was reading the comments on the FellRunners FB page and there was one comment that pushed forward the fact that you can get a British grid map reference straight off most GPS watches if you know how to do it, so you can at least work out where you are [assuming you have a map] in an emergency.

Yeah, that's why the IOF ban all GPS (except for sanctioned GPS monitoring only -like trackers) for IOF events. BOF don't care as it takes longer to work out what the grid reference is and translate that onto an O map than it does to actually navigate... However, in an emergency situation, it is useful to know how that works. I didn't think that it gave you grid ref, but did give you Long/Lat though. Or maybe I don't know how to get a grid ref out! |
