Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

What's making you smile today?

Really?

I know the changes don't happen evenly around midday, but we haven't got to the solstice yet, so the total hours of darkness per day should still be very slightly increasing...

Yes, really. Look at sunrise/sunset times. For London there are nine days with sunset at 15:51 before we creep to 15:52. We are more than half-way through those nine days. timeanddate.com

Somebody more knowledgable and cleverer than me will probably come along to explain it.

Considering the benefits of having proper snow an' all, I'm happy with only giving up to 15:15 cf London 15:51.

For @ChrisHB and @Raetomic Kitten and anyone else interested is sunrise, sunset and day length. This is for London, but you can choose other places

Something to do with the tilt of the Earth's axis, combined with the actual orbit, from memory. Probably wrong!

Yeo - allied to the fact that one rotation of the Earth about its axis is just less than 24 hours (sidereal day 12h46m4s), with the remaining time in our 24h day made up by the Earth moving round the Sun
