OK, I think I can try and keep going as threadministrator unless there is someone who would really like to take over. Put your hand up if you would like to do it and I'll hand over without protest. There may come a point in the future where I have to step back for my own mental health but for now I'll give it a go. So, anyone any sidebar targets for 2024? |

Well, I'm doing London. And (whilst I say this every time) I am not planning on going sub 3:15 as this time around I will absolutely be prioritising my missus who hopefully will make the start line this time. But never say never....

I plan to go under 3h, but i'll probably end up slightly above a few more times 🤣 Hoping to get in to Manchester, or perhaps CPH, after that its jönkoping and after that its Vaxjö. |

Merry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr)
WW, said my thoughts on your blog. Thanks for staying with us as Thread Daddy. You're the best. I have stated my 2024 goal (well maybe 2025!) is to get back to sub 3:15. 11 minutes to fined. ![]() |

Bowman, not sure if know my history but I ran 8 consecutive mara PBs down from 3:23 before getting my 1st sub 3. This included this final series where each time I went out with a sub 3 target: 3:03:08, 3:01:56, 3:00:39… For me it was fine margins. Finding the right course helped but it was just about incremental tweaks in training. And patience, unfortunately. You *will* do this…. HappyG(rrr): got a planned race yet? |

I note that one of those PBs was over the 25.9 mile Manchester marathon course. Finding a course like that helps, LOL!

Windsor Wool I'm running Manchester in April - am re-calibrating my expectations after two poor marathons in successions (or at least two poor second halves of two marathons in succession) so would like this marathon to feel 'good' and getting under 3:15 would be a nice bonus.

Not in detail, but I think we talked about it somewhere. And that’s why I’m ok with a few more attempts, even though I’m getting closer, it’s getting harder and harder to shave off those seconds ![]() If it was easy everyone could do it ![]() Maybe 2024, maybe not. |

There are lots of stories…..I took a longer route with 3:03 in my second sub three attempt in Mara 4 in 2009. I eventually ran 2:59 in Mara 24 with c8 serious sub three attempts and with 2 x 3:00:xx and 4 x 3:02:xxs along the way and lots of other not so near misses. As WW says, it was incremental changes and lots of learning along the way. I loved the journey though bit doubt I will ever do another marathon |

Thank you for staying on this thread for now, WW. Really gutted for you. I wish you all the best and hope that you'll be able to manage it well so that the door isn't completely closed on running or at least hill walking yet. I have a similar story with my sub 3:30 attempts. I had many marathons where I was just a few minutes out for a variety of reasons from 2014-2016 (interrupted training, weather on race day, shoe choice for the race). 3:37:15, 3:34:59, 3:33:00, 3:36:22 and 3:37:24 (that last one wasn't a 3:30 attempt, I just happened to run much faster than I thought I could, 3:45 was the goal there). Then nothing faster for several years due to health issues and moving country, hovered around 3:45-3:50 for 5 years before I finally cracked it this year. Patience is key and analysing previous races to get better at it. Now I'll see how far I can take it. I'll start the next round of P&D next week. Maybe I'll get into sub 3:15 range in 2025, 2024 is probably a bit too early. Improving from 3:51 in spring '22 to 3:29 this spring was very impressive for the first 2 years of my comeback. I expect it to slow down from there. If I manage half the progress for next spring (11 minutes instead of 22), I'd be delighted. |
