Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I don't find it so hard to do a MLR up to about 15 miles midweek but it's partly a similar mindset to Baz's there anyway - there's a sadistic challenge of doing it which I can work my mind up to during the day in anticipation.

I like the long P&D tempos for the same reason though - those two or three miles of warm up anticipation before a long period of discomfort (probably a sign of running them too hard!) on a "school night" gets me nicely on edge.

I was also inspired last night by heading out on a new route that I'd spotted someone else log on Strava. Probably not an ideal choice in the end in the pitch dark, with head torch battery failing and unknown terrain down by the river and through some fields where in hindsight I might have expected some cattle etc. Plus the wind in the trees, the cawing of the crows etc made me a little jumpy at times!! Will make a lovely summer early morning 12 though.

Good exploring there larks!

I mostly dreaded the tempo and the MPs. But very satisfying when they were done! :-) G

21.5 for me today, 2300ft of climbing, most of that in the last 7 miles :-0. Inching closer towards a tilt at Shakespeare marathon. Gets out P&D looks up 6 week marathon programs. Should I, shouldn't I?

solo HM for me today, was aiming for sub 90 but wind in first 5 made that impossible. 1:31:38. Not a bad run.

Chris, that looks a decent run, well done. Do it.....

21 point something miles for me today. Including a few 000 ft of snowy climbing. 5 hours out! Brilliant fun. I soooo don't care about speed when there are beautiful places to enjoy! :-) G

Great conditions at Gloucester 20 yesterday. Ran it in 5 mile progressive blocks up to marathon pace and testing fueling strategy. Chuffed to bits with how it went and ran the last 5 faster than I needed to just to see how it felt as I realised I had plenty left in the tank.

So been digging into P and D looking at schedules, and was surprised by a couple of things:

1) The lack of over 20 miles runs in the "easier" schedules.
2) And how bloomin' hard some of the midweek sessions look. And I'm not talking the MLRs. I mean 10 miles with 5 * 1km at 5k pace.

So my club does an occasional Saturday session on the flat road near here, which is 6 * 1km at even pace - which I have to say equates to 5k pace, slightly above and certainly not 3k pace. I can't do it much faster. And that session hurts a lot. The thought of doing that as 10 miles as a standalone is pretty scary. For me it's a 5*1km at 6.25 pace, that would really test me. Put in context of a week where you've already done a say 18-20 miler and have a 12 miler to look forward to after that? Or 12 miles with 3 * 1600at 5k pace which is basically a 5k at 5k pace with a couple of breaks in the course of an 8 miler? These are in the up to 55 miles a week.

So does the lack of 20 milers make that more achievable (3 in all) ? And how does it stand with the threads contentions that you usually need something like 5 * 20 milers+ (the old marathon maxim)?

It’s definitely a cumulative thing with P&D – loads of folks talk about the lack of 20 milers, absolutely no-one mentions the lack of midweek miles and hard sessions.

The intervals specify quite long recoveries which certainly helps complete those sessions. There is no way that 11 miles with 7 at LT (threshold, 10 mile race pace or however you want to define it) is anything other than a tough evenings work – if you can manage it that is :-)
