Right, I've made a start by 'tweeting' parkrunUK. I'll report back if they respond

We have a volunteer who goes round before and after the run with a clipboard and a copy of the next few weeks’ rota, drumming up volunteers every week. It works really well and has meant that we rarely have last minute appeals anymore. People find it difficult to say ‘no’ when they’re asked in person.

We used to have a board but it was large and difficult to carry on a bike and people don't have printers to prepare it every week.

SarahWoo, I was standing next to a lady doing the same last week. The vast majority of people were saying 'no' and coming up with a range of excuses.

I think there are genuine concerns that once the proposed parkrun in Lichfield starts, there won't be enough volunteers in the Sutton Coldfield/Lichfield area.

parkrun email grump - i am not one of six million parkrunners as a recent email claimed. Just registering tor a barcode does not make someone a parkrunner. Real figure (given people sometimes registering more than once) about half of that?
I'm annoyed because i expect a greater level of integrity from parkrun than that. In these times when it seems more than ever people and organisations are just making shit up, it would be nice if parkrun hq didn't.

I think you find parkrun HQ doesn't agree that everyone should volunteer to be part of the "parkrun family" (and I agree with them). There'll be people who volunteer every chance they can at non parkrun activities (say, prison visitors, school governors, charity shop volunteers, guide runners, school reading companions, club race organisation, full time family caring responsibilities etc) for whom the concept of enforced volunteering at parkrun would need tantamount to excluding them from parkrun (I know making t shirts contingent on volunteering doesn't really exclude, but it certainly sets a tone).
They won't countenance it. And I don't think they should either.
I'm not diminishing the impact that struggles for volunteers causes, I just don't think any concept of mandatory minimum volunteering is the right approach.

We try and get everyone to feel part of our community and so when we are short of people you ask to community for some support. If they feel the community will go away then more step up to the plate I find. Have a look through the volunteer history and find those that volunteer occasionally. Put a face to a name and say hi to them every week. The more engaged they are the more they will help. Worth a try, it works for us.
The other thing I do is do a monthly newsletter to all those opted in. It gives them more info than is on FB and hopefully people see the email updates as not just another email asking for volunteers. We also tweet to say it’s been published and if people want to read it then opt in..
That reminds me, better write the Sept one!

I'd done over 30 parkruns before volunteering for the first time. Those 30 parkruns were spread over many years and reflected lack of opportunity to attend regularly so when I could attend I wanted to run. My ratio of volunteering to running is quite healthy-looking now.
