Interesting discussion. I've run 84 times and volunteered 11. Mainly in two blocks - early days of parkrunning and then last year when I'd broken my ankle and so couldn't run. Early days I was running 4 or 5 times a week, so not parkrunning every so often was fine. Currently my mojo is hiding but I'm in a routine to do parkrun and it's the only run in the week I can guarantee running - hence I don't want to miss one. With regard to community, my home parkrun attracts about 400-500 participants on average. I find it difficult to identify a meaningful community within that, and must admit that I turn up, run and go home.

Just as a quick aside, I touristsed at Sutton Park this weekend and really enjoyed the course and the volunteers were excellent as always - thank you! 😁.
I was a little surprised however at the ignorance shown by the amassed runners at the brief. Across almost 60 different events I have never witnessed such a disregard to what was being said by the RD by those present. The amount of chatter was frankly rude and if that's the typical level of 'community' you are dealing with FreshStart then I can sympathise with some of the difficulties you have in finding volunteers 😥.

Our ED/RD won't start until we have silence (excepting dogs). Then she simply stops again if any chatter starts. Works a treat.

We have signs that say "Please be quiet and listen to the briefing". We get a couple of people to wander around holding them up - I have been known to pointedly hold one in the face of someone who wouldn't shut up

I'm pleased you enjoyed the Sutton Park course Weath, I was funnel manager so I missed the brief as I was setting up the finish area. I'll let the Core Team know about the chatting during the brief as it's an ongoing issue

We have those HellsBells but people seem reluctant to use them. If I'm in the start area on Saturday I'll get them out and walk around

Chatting unfortunately is an on going problem at most (especially large) parkruns. I was at junior parkrun today and to be fair the kids were quiet but it was the adults who were chatting and the RD was difficult to hear anyway without any megaphone or mike.
Knew exactly who Mrs S. was talking about as she is Shondo's most infuriating person who does parkrun

Chatting during the briefing infuriates me. It’s so rude! We have some signs that just say ‘Quiet!’ which make a bit of a difference. I have been known to wander around the crowd shushing people - such an old grump!
