Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

She has only covered about 5 miles in the last 90 minutes but it looks like there was a stop of about 15 mins a short while ago which would put he moving rate at about 4mph which is consistent with the rest of the day. Google maps says she has about 14 miles left to do tonight. So a 17-18 hour day in total.

Looks like she's confused the tracker by not quite passing the point designated as the end of Day 5 but it would appear to be pretty much bang on a 17 hour day. She held together well in the last 3 hours or so. It looked like she could easily have taken another 30 mins plus. It looks like a hard day tomorrow. Largely straight up the A6 to just north of Kendal. Most of that route is a horrible drive, I really wouldn't fancy running it. Particularly the bits with no footpath.

Slightly later start today but about 14.5 miles in the first 3 hours so moving along at the same pace as yesterday.

She's gone off-route at the moment, could be a planned change for roadworks or something, but her alternate route doesn't really look much longer.

Looking at Google Maps the alternative looks a better option Gus but she's doing it again and this time it looks like it adds distance (and keeps her on the main road when there is an alternative). Decent pace so far this morning, 24 miles in 5.20. Interesting title from yesterday because she seemed to rally well in the latter part of the day when it looked like she might be struggling at one point. Looking at the route ahead Thursday looks a tough day up through the Borders/Southern Uplands towards Edinburgh, lots of undulation on roads that won't be great for running on (busy A-roads with heavy fast moving traffic, lots of HGVs and no pavement). Day 10 (Saturday) is the picturesque day, up past the Cairngorms, through the forests round Aviemore.

Yeah, going around the Broughton bypass rather than straight thru the village has added distance - weird !!!

Looking at strava there's a bike doing the same route as her every day, so assume that's there as a rear gunner with flashing light to give some sort of awareness to traffic coming from behind when no pavement. A long day in the saddle for someone ( maybe more than one person doing shifts ) doing that every day !!!

I'd want more than a bike behind me on some of those roads!

I'm a bit confused about her remaining days......

She says in her Info panel that it's about 874 miles and she has to do 12 days of about 70 miles, but at 840 miles that leaves her 34 miles short.

Looking at her 12th day, just past Berriedale to JoG then that's only about 41 miles, so if she does 11 days at 70 miles then 41 on the 12th day then only 811 miles. It's as if she should be looking at 13 days, ie 12 * 70 plus the 41

Suppose I could go and measure out the remaining days on google maps.........unless anyone's already done that ?? ;-)

Agree about the roads, ff. I avoid A roads entirely (unless running in a closed road event or occasionally in a town where you can rely on there being a pavement/sidewalk). I don't like B roads either, especially here where there are either hedges or "Devon banks" right up to the carriageway where you might hope for an open verge. There's one stretch of B road near here, only a couple of hundred yards, which is a "missing link" between two minor road junctions which give access to nice running areas and it's horrible to run on, to the extent that there are now two holes in the hedge and a runners' track is being worn through scrub and brambles parallel to the road.

In a challenge like this, where most miles are on A roads, I just don't know what the risk assessment looks like or how the runner must feel at the sound or sight of approaching traffic. On minor roads, I normally face oncoming traffic, but often cross over to get onto the outside of a bend and then cross back again. On these A roads, I can't think that that would be possible. Traffic avoidance must add significantly to the pressures the runner faces.
