I recently had a "pulling" calf and was seeing my chiropracter within a short space of time so I asked her. She could feel the problem straight away and said that no amount of foam rolling and stretching could have sorted the knot out for me and I had a massage the next day which sorted it properly. This was only last week and I managed to run 6 miles last night, including hills.
I also had calf problems and saw a physio who massaged the right areas and gave the right exercises to do. I think that maybe you should bite the bullet and find a good physio who will check any underlying problems and finally get you running. It may seem expensive but if it's what you really want then you'll have to be just that little bit more patient, bite the bullet and fork out. I'm sure that you'll find it worth it in the longer scheme of things.
Btw, I started 3 years ago at age 55. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. It will help lots of other newbies starting out and having problems.

I wouldn't stretch pre-run especially if your calves are tight, asking for trouble. Power walk for 5 mins, see how it is then do 1 min gentle run, 1 min walk x 5 then warm down. Don't stretch afterwards either. On a non run day do some gentle stretching and some calf raises to build strength. Hold some light hand weights after a couple of weeks of building up to increase the strength. Try 10 x raises on both feet then rest then 8 times on each foot while the other one is off the floor. The balancing helps with muscle development and stability too. And a proper massage from sports massage therapist or a physio will help. If they are niggly, rest, sailor bike for a couple of days and try again. You don't want a muscle tear x

Hi everyone, I'm a complete beginner and have just done my 5th ever run/walk! Feeling very proud. This week was the first time I experienced forgetting about the effort/breathing etc and for a short period of time the actual running felt effortless. Hoping to feel that again! I'm running twice a week and taking it all very slowly. I can already see and feel a difference in my body!
