One of the things that I've been thinking about since the thing at parliament (I still need to blog that) is how we can take real beginners to running, and lead them through the process of becoming a runner. The 'couch to 5k' programme from the NHS would seem to be an ideal way to get people on that transition to their first parkrun, and from there, to wherever they want to go - but if we can take that isolated process, and find a way to support and encourage those folks from within the Fetch community, I reckon that could be huge.
So I'm thinking about how we can (a) get hold of lots of people who are wanting to try something new with their fitness; and (b) how we can lead them through it. Obviously, there's all the new year stuff coming up, and Jantastic and so forth - but I'm thinking about how we can create something that will allow a beginner to jump in at any point, and work their way through something.
Some sort of adoption process? Fetch a friend?
I'm off for a run now. Would love to come back to some interesting posts

so, are you thinking of having a buddy system for newbies to Fetch/running. Kind of like the Lazybones/Pesterers thing but you keep the person for an allocated time?

I am hoping to start a group of beginners off in January (along with a running buddy) - we were planning to use the C25k as our starting point. I always mention Fetch to people when I'm talking about running & motivation.
(Not sure if this is interesting though :))

The SAP club thread might be a good place to start, (Slow And Proud). It's a thread for beginners, with lots of support and encouragement for beginners. We don't mind going slow, and we have monthly "virtual" events, the winner being the slowest to complete it!

I like "Fetch a Friend". I think it's something that happens informally through the forums anyway with a lot of more experienced members. It would be nice to have it as a clear and obvious thing you could opt into when joining, perhaps as part of a "new member" email when signing up.
I guess then it's a case of having easily accessible beginner training plans and event guides for the newbie's location so they can see what they can do and where they can do it.
And generally getting people to be active (to some degree) onthe forum because being a part of a community brings with it a lot of support and encouragement, even when that community is a vurtual one made up of odd people of the internet.
Perhaps expecially when that community is a vurtual one made up of odd people of the internet.

There's been a bit of discussion about beginners/slower runners on a Fetch Mile thread recently too. I think a lot of people are intimidated by how much of a pace gap there is between them and the pointy end of the field.
I think providing encouragement and support to people who feel that way is a big element in keeping them running. How do we, as a (mainly virtual) community, deliver that support effectively?

On the b) part, I think it would be a good idea to get new runners to start strengthening from the beginning, not just to running, although that's obviously the most important part. Reduce the risk of injuries ad introduce good habits from the start.

I do think there should be a welcome page / thread that newbies can be sent to when they sign up - then we can stalk - sorry - welcome them aboard in an adopt a newbie sort of way.
That could work for here not sure about running in general
