Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

I have introduced a few people to this site, but it is only a few, and that is after they've started running and had a good go at it. it is a running site afterall and this first port of call will be for runners. I suspect all of us who have hung around here a bit do that sort of stuff anyhow.

Dunno. I've usually got a view on most things (!) but I really don't know. I think people end up here once they're already into running a bit, not as a "how do I get into running" search. The meta description says: "This is a website for runners etc..." and even that could be intimidating for some? That could be changed of course.

Possibly a big "Beginners Start Here" type button? Then all the good stuff that folk have suggested?

No, I really don't have any good ideas. Soz. I'll duck out now! :-) G

I didn't mean so much manipulating search engines, I meant possibly tapping into the nhs type of website so that when someone went there there might be a link under 'where to find out about running' or that kind of thing?

i think a thread where beginners can go on and ask/discuss without feeling stupid is a great way to go - starting a new thread to ask what u realise may be a stupid question to most runners is very difficult - and altho advice is there if u google it - it is easier to make sense of other people's experiences and has more of a community feel

I've been here for a while and didn't realise SAP stood for Slow and Proud. I assumed it was a thread for one of those techniques that makes running seem complicated, like POSE. Maybe it could be given its full name in the thread title.

hehe Spleen, me too. I might check in now :)

I like the idea of a beginners click here button and thread. Possibly even linked to on the race finder page because that's how I first came to Fetch.

Then I found I could log my achievements in training and races.

Then I found the forums.

Maybe make more of the training plans and provide some easy beginner ones (unless these do exist, but I don't want to lose my plan by looking!)

Spleen and JingleDaBells - Good idea! I've tried to change the title to include the words "Slow and Proud" - but I'm only able to edit the description, not the title. Unless it's somewhere else where you change it. There's a description in the Introduction, but you'd have to go into the thread to see that.
A link from the NHS Get Active Your Way
nhs.uk would be a good start, that's where people go when they are thinking about becoming active.

Welcome to fetch, totalbeginner, you may have to change your screen name in a couple of years' time :)
A lot of beginners use C25k apps, even people who don't seem very techy and people who also join real groups for beginners. A fetch c25k app? You would do it in an inimitable way, Lord fetch :)
