Merry Christmas & HappyNewG(rrr)
Welcome TB.
I found Fetch through word of mouth, and was already running, so hard for me to relate to. Also, so long ago, that things like Facebook didn't exist - 2007 (or if it did it wasn't on the radar).
We were told by some younglings who came to our club that they couldn't find us online when they searched. We were confused and said we had a website and if you put in Harmeny Pentland Runners in google it comes up 2nd or 3rd on list. They said, oh, I wouldn't search in Google, I just do it in Facebook. Facebook *is* the internet, to some folk! G

Here's a more specific question to chew on for today
Let's say we were to have a beginners section (I'm thinking very much that we will).
What should we put in it? Here are some thoughts, in no particular order.
1) Clear ways to get some sort of plan to help you to your first race 2) Supportive comments from others who have started from scratch 3) Some reassuring numbers e.g. the massive variation in running pace that exists across our community, or a nice poll that shows that we support everyone from first to last. 4) The usual contra-indicators that might mean someone should check with their GP e.g. asthma, blood pressure, heavily pregnant, missing head etc. 5) Assuming we are putting beginners through some sort of C25K programme, a way to chat to people who are in the same week. 6) Brief indication of how to record training, with some straightforward progress graphs. 7) Links to friendly threads 8) What to do if you have questions that aren't covered.
Any other thoughts?

Something to make sure we don't just create a Newbie Ghetto where the new bods stay clear of the main forums and never feel safe to come out and play. Not sure how but it's an important one.
Graduation day?

10) Glossary of terms. don't laugh, but when I started I didn't know what people were talking about when they mentioned sub-60 etc... probably because I had no concept on how far/fast you could run it didn't enter my head that it was a goal to get under a certain time for races

Links to a few running apps, newbies don't usually have Garmins but often like to know how far they have gone, even when they just start out on timed run/walks
Links to c25k plans
List of beginner groups, user-added just like the race finder? Run England has a group finder, but it's ridiculously out of date as groups spring up and drop off the radar all the time, I don't know if it's updated by the leaders or by local coordinators...
Maybe a few personal stories by people who were beginners not too long ago, it's intimidating to start running and feel slow and rubbish, people like to see that others have gone through it and are now able to do xyz
Separate sections for c25k and then 5-10k to provide progression? A surprising number of people on here have been running for years but have to go back to C25k due to injury, pregnancy, large dose of CBAs etc.

Talking about C25k, you could have them starting at certain fixed dates to get people all doing the same week at the same time? Might provide better group cohesion? Then we could pile in and tempt them out into fetch central when they graduate People tend to start exercising at very similar times of year: January, after Easter, early September when schools go back. Research shows people start exercising on a Monday, after holidays and bank holidays and after their birthdays

I was thinking that we could have 8 groups, one for each week of the schedule - and at the end of each week, the members of each group could be prompted to advance into the next group, or possibly return to week 1.

i am not sure about that fleecy - when people have the inclination to start exercising then it's best not to tell them to wait - they will either go elsewhere (to their detriment :p) or not bother coming back at designated time
i think as and when would work for most folk
