Sensible advice on pace and progression too, GP. Too many begineers start out trying to run as far as they can as fast as they can. They then either
a) Get injured and stop b) Get exhausted and stop c) Hate the constant pain they're in and stop or d) Run for England at the Commonwealth Games, this being by a long way the minority outcome.

I'm thinking, "Leave the poor blighters to find their own way in peace, without being bothered by self-appointed mentors." I suspect that's not what would be regarded as a helpful response.

A new runners guide page would be excellent Maybe a group of experienced people willing to act as mentors who can be identified as someone you can fmail with questions you're too shy/embarrassed/whatever to raise ona thead?

If you google 'how to start running uk' runnersworld is in the top result and the next few are from health related websites - so perhaps we need to make links there so that beginners would find Fetch quite swiftly?

I certainly don't think mentors/buddies/whatever should be imposed on people, V'Rap, and I do think that if you're comfortable with forums and not terribly self-conscious you can generlly find a supportive ear and voice within the community BUT for some, if they choose it, would it be a bad ting to have a guide for those early stages? And a welcome Fmail with suggested beginners plans and events? An pointers to useful threads?

V'rap, I mean more a recognised place where they get the message "we're here if you want us" rather than a more stalk wry pouncing on the poor bleeders

Search engine manipulation is a dark art, AL, unless you have a big advertising budget to spend with Google.

The mentor thing would *deffo* be "if you want some help, here's someone you can ask", rather than getting a bored year 2 student to show you round
