Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

So for me it would be to not include anything say less than 100-200m but only if it didn't cause fetch too much work

It's just one line of code :-)

I, for one, would have plenty of activities (walks only) that are less than 500metres. But they are all pretty much in the one square. And not one that I’d be losing if I didn’t have any walks in it. I can see these, JCB. Out of interest, what are they?

There’s an app I use that logs outside time. So when I go outside with the dogs, gardening, or getting fresh air, I will sometimes log it as a walk. 🙂 That raises an interesting point, since people put in activities for different reasons, not always in an attempt to gain an advantage in a game. Although I like the automatic processing into a game, sometimes it might be nice to exclude some of my activities from being included (either afterwards or as some sort of configuration). That’s be a bit of work though.

I've added a new category that you could use: Cross Training > Fresh Air. This wouldn't get picked up by the game (or to be more accurate, it might initially, but should correct itself after you've recategorised).

This rule change wouldn't stop anyone logging anything for any reason, it would just exclude short entries from the game.

Tried a few hours squarebagging without using any short out & backs. Probably added 0.5 miles to the whole thing, so no great shakes really.
Saying that I now really fancy a banana milkshake.

If you go shopping but first go for a WSW short loop to score 4 squares, is that really against the spirit?

I am seeing walks of 10-50 metres. Is that against the spirit?

Now it's getting grey. A handful per day is probably OK. Pathologically alternating run/walk across many squares is too much - you'd be double scoring for only 1x the effort.

In a competitive battle, I don't see a problem with recording a tiny walk in a square you are in for doing errands.

An algorithm that might address the worst perceived abuse without penalising short dog walks would be to exclude activities that are very short and start within 5 minutes of the end of another activity, or end within 5 minutes of the start of another activity.

This is a list of activity types I have tried sorting by how acceptable they are. Others may have a different order, or draw the line elsewhere between acceptable and unacceptable.

Totally Acceptable:
Any 3km+ run, walk or cycle
Any 1km+ run, walk or cycle

Contention begins:
A 500m walk after a run (tracked cooldown, bagging squares)
Isolated 500m (~6 squares, serious gamer)
A 200m walk after a >1km run (tracked cooldown, bagging squares)
Isolated 200m (max 4 squares, serious gamer)
A single 200m activity straight before or after another 200m activity (very serious gamer)
50m walk after a run or cycle (cheeky 2 squares?)
Isolated 50m walk/run (over the top? Against the spirit? Competitive gamer?)
A series of 200m activities (feels like abuse to me)

Unacceptable:
Recording a walk when cycling
Any activity while sitting in a car

I think we're looking for a characterization of what playing "against the spirit" is.

I think it's gaining a significant advantage by using activity recording tactics that are artificial.

A short walk to bag tactical squares is OK - it's a competitive game.

Breaking up what should be a single activity in to many parts is not OK. Maybe one "split" to insert a tactical walk is OK, (eg bike 5km, walk 100m, bike 5km).

Even the pattern 1km run, 1km walk, 1km run, 1km walk, 1km run is probably against the spirit of you'd naturally have run the whole thing. But then again, it is a game to be "played"?

Whatever rules get enforced can still be gamed, so it would be good to capture the spirit, because I suspect the vast majority of us would be happy to play in spirit, once it has been defined.

Good questions. There is also a trade off between simplicity and complexity for understanding them and having them coded. If there are certain rules they would need to be clear. And thinking about how they can be exploited/worked to the Nth degree may require tweaks.

If everyone’s training distances (and which squares they covered) for ones matching the WSW grid we’re available, then they could be reviewed or explained as need be.

Some suspicions could be allayed or confirmed. If, like in my example, I go in the backyard I’m affecting one square. I have a score of 30 points. If I just include my runs it’d be 14 or 16 (not usually running in the backyard but from my front door, which is in the same square). Even if I have 21 backyard activities in that square it only scores once per day. Not knowing that it’s the same square could make people think I’m going to many different squares.

Some consideration might be needed for people who walk or run slowly or with great difficulty. For them going 50 metres might be an achievement. I know for my dad it would be.

Wow. Been following the discussion over the last few days.
We could just leave things be and accept different people play the game differently.

It's all a bit of fun. No one wins anything. No one gets hurt.

Or am I just odd?

Agree tOR.
When the game first started and I was playing seriously, I can remember getting quite wound up by an opponent who was recording runs at 31 mins/mile alongside other runs at 5 mins/mile and some in the middle at around 14 mins/mile. This was when runs earned 2 points per square and cycling/walking earned 1 point per square. I realised I was being a bit judgemental, not knowing the first thing about the circumstances of the opponent. It’s just a game after all. The vast majority play fairly!
