Went outside and looked up to establish that it wasn't the Luftwaffe overhead, and saw a woman having a fag by a white van parked outside next door. "Morning," I said to her. "What's that noise?" "Oh, they're having a bouncy castle for their kids' birthday next door, so that's the pump for it. I know it's a bit early, sorry." Only when I went back inside did I piece together that in fact she was the one who had hired them the bouncy castle, which would have been brought by her in her van, and the reason it was so early is because that's when she turned up. Two hours later and all we've had is two hours of the bouncy castle compressor droning constantly, no sound of any merriment from any kids yet to make it worthwhile.
