Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Nearly taper time for me! Not sure at all whether to aim for 8 min miles atBoddington and risk grinding to a halt with two laps to go, or settle for 8.15-8.20 and take a chunk off my pb and a step on the way to sub 3.30. In also doing Wolverhampton marathon in September so I have a backup plan.

do you use a hrm heebie? i shared your concern pre-vlm, but had loads of training data to gage how my heart rate should be at pmp so i used that and on race day i kept an eye on it to make sure the 8mm wasn't over-doing it too much early on.

Occasionally, but I'm usually fine running by feel.

heebie, the problem with a marathon is that although common wisdom is to be conservative, if you really want a desired time, setting off at 8:15-8:20 will leave a mountain to climb latter in the race. I slowed in the last 10k on Monday but don't recall being overtaken by any runner that was on my lap (I'm discounting speedy Helen as she did pass me with one lap to go but she was a lap ahead!) ;-)

i'm sure you will be fine with that. you are a lot more experienced at marathon (and beyond) racing than me - this vlm was only my 3rd mara, so i didn't feel i had the experience to judge what mara racing should 'feel' like so needed the hrm numbers as a comfort blanket!

agree with FR, if you start at 8.20 you are basically saying 3.30 is not going to happen today as that is too much time to catch up.

Did FR just confess to being chicked ;)

Difficult decision, you might want a hot weather plan. what does coach lady say? I would say if it is hot then just play it safe and get a nice PB then save 3.30 for W. If its not hot then not sure without analysing your training paces! Personally I prefer to be more conservative and would prob go for the 8.20 option myself as I wouldnt believe I could go from 3.55 to 3.30 in one go. However, you are not me and I dont know where you are at. Wolverhapton is only a couple of months later, you have waited all this time for 3.30 you might as well just wait a couple more months to do it with more confidence at W having had a stepping stone at B.
