Even pacing guys - a common subject/theme on the 3:15 thread! There are pros and cons adn everyone's different, but the conclusion always seems to come back to even pacing is the best balance of going as hard as you can but not blowing up. Of course 8:00s will feel relatively easy for first 10, 13, or even 16 miles, but will feel bliddy hard at the end. Tis the way for everyone! :-)G

agree, even pacing the way to go heeebs, you have loads of time before bods, can you do some practice 8mm pace runs and see how they feel then compare that to how your old MP used to feel pre marathon??? I tend to find in training MP feels quite hard, well not like a hard session but it feels harder than I think it should. I have done this long enough now though to know that if I go out for a MP run and it feels more like HM pace I shouldnt be stressing!

Agree that even pacing is the way to go. One of the things that I've found to help is gaining the confidence to go out hard. I tend to be naturally a little conservative in my pacing - I really don't like running the risk of blowing up or DNFing a race, but I think to run at your best, the line between going hard and blowing up is quite narrow. For me, the confidence to go out fast with the potential for blowing up has only come after running quite a few marathons. Other people are happier to take the risk and really go for it.

I'm with the even pacing too
An just to say don't be 'scared' of the 3:15 thread - embrace it an believe I've been in there since my PB was 3:54 - my 1st Sub 20 5k on New Years Day 2011 an I decided that was enough to validate a 3:15 one day LOL.
Take your own reasons an just go for it :-). Pretty sure believing I could get there one day got me the Sub 1:30 half less than 3 months later then took another year for the marathon but it happened And it happened well before the end of Dec 2012 target id set myself for the half to get a London Champ start an then go for under 3:15.

Even pacing for sure, I learned that lesson already! Yes, if I set off at 8.15 pace then I'm not going for a 3.30 time. 8.15-8.20 feels like marathon pace should. Really easy to start off but difficult to do near the end of a long run. 8.00 pace feels ok but not easy enough at the moment. I'll test it out on Sunday's run, I've been feeling a bit flat and tired this week so probably not able to judge effort quite right.
Coachlady agreed that 3.40 would be more realistic and still a huge pb. I think she talks a lot of sense. But, as always, I will make the decision on the start line

Embra mara was the first time i really tried for even pacing - i think it's the way forward for me although everyone is different. I was running a 'comfy' 7.50 for the first 17 - 18 miles then as H:) pointed out, the race begins from there. I'm looking forward to my Autumn/Winter marathon to have another crack at a pb and see what happens from there.
Smout - 'sound like a right weirdo' Nothing new to report then ......

Seper marathon hellen.
Sounds like even pacing is way to go. My first marathon had second half 20 mins slower than first half. my last one was one 2 mins difference and quite a bit faster overall !!
Well todays 10k of 44:17 tells me I need to practice a lot more running at faster speeds. It was strange I felt I was running within myself...oh well !! Sounds like I need to sign up at Spa striders later in the month when i get back from holiday and do a few club sessions if I am to break 3:30 in abingdon !!!

Decision made, please remove me from the list and move me to long term hopefuls. I need a few months training to knock 15s per mile off my cruising pace! Next spring....
