Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

That was a tough read Bowman 🇸🇪, probably because it was so familiar. I’m sure that a tough experience like that is familiar to many others here too. I’m sorry, I’m sure that it’ll take you a few days to process so no hasty decisions.

But, but, but….one crap race doesn’t make you a crap runner. It’s just one crap race, no more than that.

If it were me in this situation I think I’d spend a bit of time doing some shorter races and get my other PBs a bit more in line with a sub3 conversion. Then I might look for a couple of marathons and look for some step-by-step improvements to get me there rather than doing it one big jump.

For now recover well and try not to be too hard on yourself. We know you’re a quality athlete with many more great runs to come.

I live in dread of one of those days! I probably need to experience one at some point, or maybe risk it more by being a bit less cautious / more ambitious with race day pace maybe? Though maybe not too...

I've had several of those days, sometimes without an obvious explanation for it being quite as bad as it was, and the experience Bowman 🇸🇪 had is a good example of a situation in which it's better to stop when you realise you're not going to come through the bad patch than to drag yourself to the finish any old way.

Sounds like it was warm Bowman. It looked it on the coverage and from the weather report I looked up. Was a lot of your training done in the cooler conditions? If so, that can have a big impact on HR when then racing in warm conditions. We can train to race in warm conditions, but I am really very poor at it. It can be an advantage with autumn races - IE train through the summer and then race when it may be cooler. Training for spring races can have this as a disadvantage.

Don’t give up. You’re a great runner and you’ve seen great improvements.

Wished you all the best on your blog there Bowman.

However, I'm like larkim and haven't ever had that quite that bad a feeling in a race. Could be because I'm too conservative. Actually yesterday's half was about as bad as I get with an even split (well positive split by 2 seconds), and my second marathon in 2009 when I had a bad last 3 miles. In almost all other races I negative split, which wisdom says means I went out too slowly! So maybe you have to dare as you did, to get great times, but at the risk of implosion. But I'll probably stick with my approach, as I really don't fancy that kind of pain during middle of a race. Big respect to you for going at it hard. :-) G

Windsor Wool Yes i think many runners have had the experience for sure. Besides Larkim :)
Yes i need to do some thinking, get a few runs in, and get back on the horse. Maybe some races as you say. In the heat :) Thanks!

larkim i'm not sure you need on of those, if you can get by without it it's better, you have done well so far, but yes it was a lesson learned, but i pondering my self, did i really have to find this out the hard way, i'm a fairly intelligent person, or so i thought.. :)

Velociraptor i have a few too, but nothing of this magnitude. But yes, i didn't have to prove to myself that i could get around, that's why i stopped i think, all goals went out the window and i had no other plan, next time i would have another plan, from start, cus for sure it would be nice to had an other completed marathon, not feeling it to be a waste, and a big chunk of money spent, only to feel it to be a total failure. I even have to throw away the nice finisher T-shirt since i didn't even finish.. :)

Big_G It was warm for sure, not crazy hot in comparison to how hot i can be of course, but yes i have no training in warm conditions at all.

I the back of my mind i did have been thinking about training in cold condition and then trying to compete in warm conditions might be a bit harder, but i didn't really think it through further, obviously :) My next marathon is an autumn one, but now it feels a long way out, and will i be healthy and not injured, will i have the strength to keep this up.. well probably, but the pressure is on..
I won't give up. Even though some bad thoughts have popped up for sure..

If it were easy everyone would do it, and life goes on :)
Thanks for the encouraging words!

Thanks HappyG(rrr), usually i am an cautious general actually, i think i had built up some bad judgement and expectations due to a really good training block.

And with no experience of the heat, i kinda missed that little parameter in my last preparations..
An expensive lesson, but now i got that experience. I gonna lick my wounds a while, and then get back in the game.

Thanks, and at least i have that, i went for broke, sandbagging an inevitable blow up, that i know was coming fast.

Tough read Bowman 🇸🇪 but sure you'll come back stronger. As WW said, go smash some 5k/10ks - always makes you feel better!

Ran a 19:09 parkrun PB on Saturday, I have done precisely zero speedwork in the last few months and just shows loads of long slow miles, bit of MP etc makes you quicker at the shorter stuff (as everyone on here has said...) Next stop sub 40 10k I think.

In sub 3:15 attempt news, I opted for Chester marathon in the Autumn, was the most palatable weekend away option for the family!

Thanks PJH92 I'll see where i'll go from here racing wise, i have a few thoughts :)
Yes long slow runs are great, and have done me well for sure. I might keep doing that, and go back to some base training for a while. Good luck on your sub 40 and sub 3:15!
