Let’s be honest, magic shoes have made it easier for many of us to stem the inevitable decline with age or even drive us on to PBs a decade after we started running (my case). Well above that wava for you lark in that situation. Particularly with a change to the aforementioned magic shoes!! |

HG said reach peak in 5 years, that an extremely short period for someone to start training and get to their best IMO. A 5 year peak is a slightly different question. Age related declines will unfortunately conflict with the effects of training for old athletes. |

Magic shoes haven't stemmed decline or been proven to yet, they've just reset benchmarks (so a 2:30 runner might now run 2:25). Soon people will have careers fully in magic shoes and if they last longer then you can say they've stemmed something.

Shoes don't count WW ![]() Not sure I could rationally say there is more than 5pp WAVA improvements possible due to a full on elite schedule, but that's pretty impossible to say. I'd rather low ball it though. Then what does that say for the runners on here who do achieve figures in the 80s; could they add 5pp to their performance and get themselves on the brink of national / elite level? |

You're right SPR, but it does mean some people's times have plateaued in a way that wouldn't otherwise have happened; they can still hit 35min 10ks because of the shoes, whereas if the shoes weren't there they'd be drifting back towards 36min or so etc.

I'm still yet to own a pair of 'magic shoes ' and won't do so until my training can justify the cost. I'll just keep trundling along in my lead weights for now😉

larkim of course, I didn't disagree with that but the question is whether there's a real difference as this is just a temporary shot in the arm for those in both eras.

It's temporary in that the plateau will only likely affect runners in the period that the shoe tech has accelerated, definitely.

So, I won't be running London after all. Booo. Thought I had a club place sewn up, but hadn't properly interpreted this which means that they reduced the allocation to our club from 1 to zero. Son has a place, but is injured and I think he'd only have been persuaded to run it in 2022 if I'd got a place too, and ironically it's his rolled over place which means the club doesn't get one! I suppose I could do an illicit bib swap within the family, but there's not much point in running it if any result won't be officially in my name! London would have been ideal as my first opportunity as a V50 to bag a GFA time too, as well as run with my son, so need to think if I can be motivated to be up for Chester on the same day. |
