Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

WW - I'd never heard of "2-2 breathing" before, had to google it, interesting !

I've absolutely no idea how frequently or regularly I breath when running, something new to worry about on the next few runs, thanks ;-)

Gus, it does seem the most ridiculous thing ever being told how best to do something that is entirely natural and subconscious. I read about it in the Daniels book where there are other variants. I'm pretty hooked now though for runs at MP and faster.

In fairness, I can get hooked on gimmicks / fads. Looked at a pic of myself in the HM yesterday and saw that I was wearing sunglasses, calf guards, compressions shorts, a sweatband, and the super shoes. I'll try anything and have zero shame!

WW - Yes a nice V40 Win today. 5th Overall out of 397. 39:09 for the 10k which is pretty much all off road (bar a little bit at finish) Goes through Hatfield Forest. The grass was pretty thick in places which made it a slog and on a farmers field where its a fairly small track (your ankles woudlnt have liked it!!)

I might look at this breathing later, but I am not sure I want to introduce something new that I need to worry about !!!

Some fine weekend training/racing team, I'm impressed :-)

Daz - nice to get a trophy(?). Even nicer to put in a solid time on an off-road course.

WW - great form. That's a strong distance for you. I get aware of breathing patterns especially on tempo sessions (the rare times I do them ;-)) and 2:2 is a good rhythm to be in. Never thought, let alone tried, to use it to manage effort in a race - interesting idea.
LOL at your self-aware #3113.

Nice training HM CW. Whether 86% MHR is OK or not will depend on how much more beyond that you would have had! Which isn't much of an answer. But it's a perfectly OK marathon effort level if well-trained.

That's really encouraging larkim. You're heading in all the right directions.

Gus - I know how that feels. I've missed out so much of the sessions I would normally like to have under my belt. We are where we are (although I don't have a follow-up race to muddy the planning waters..)

Peacey - looks like there is an "Average Lap Time" field available on FR230, which is the important one. So I guess the set-up should work in the same way?

ptb - What would you say a max HR would be on a 10k. Mine seemed to be pretty high yesterday for the distance. Always thought my max was around 198 (maybe 200 at a push). Yesterday got to 195 with an average of 189. It was a steady increase so happy with the data. I was a little bunged up yesterday and woke up today snotty so maybe that had an impact !! :)

So training's been up and down for a while here, but last week was an up (for volume at least) with 77m. If I could string another 4-5 like that together, then I might actually get some form and speed back. (That should probably read 'speed', since all I really mean is I wish I was running 7:45 for 130bpm rather than the 8:25 it is now)

Yes, Medoc next week. There's a 6h30m cut-off apparently, and I think we're going to be pretty close to that. We're pushing a wheelchair, and I think only a couple of us out of 15 are actually runners - so getting the group round inside 6h30 might actually turn out to be a triumph.

I mentioned a few days back that it was a fundraising effort for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. I shared this link out on FB yesterday, and was chuffed to get a couple of donations from this thread already. It's a horrible disease, and a great cause, and if anyone had a few quid they wanted to chip in then I, and the whole team, would be delighted.

Daz - nice. You shouldn't need any encouragement to post those photos here, get them up!

I don't have much 10k race data myself. Looking back I can see my PB, and a race in the following year, were raced at around 164-166bpm. My maxHR then was somewhere between 180 and 185... so I think you're finding higher numbers than I could.
But I think you and I (either by nature, or by training) are different types of runners anyway so I wouldn't try to correlate everything exactly to the % or the bpm.

I had a look a %MHR for different runs to see what 86% could be compared to:

Old HM PB on the same course 91%MHR
Only marathon 82%MHR
Bracknell HM PB 85%MHR

So I'd say 86% was alright (a lot easier than 91%), and it looks like I wasn't trying hard enough at Chester Marathon!
