Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Hi JenHB - the book is okay but as GlennR suggests it is a bit thin and tries to cover a lot of ground and not just running. There are chapters on burning fat, blood sugar level and even clothing. I also found the constant links to his site or related products a little annoying.

Some of his advice on heart rate is difficult to achieve when you are an older runner. For instance he suggests easy runs should be no more than 65% of max heart rate. So for me at 55 that suggests running at no more than (220-55)*65% = 107 bpm which is very hard to do as even walking would raise my pulse up to around 100 bpm.

I think the book is okay as an introduction to the concept but I would struggle to follow all his advice to the letter.

I had that book. Like all that set out a new training theory, it consists of the idea itself and then a bunch of padding. Heart Rate Training for the Compleat Idiot (remember that one?) was similar.

All you need is on the website, really. Once you've absorbed or accepted the principle that it's okay to walk during a run, just experiment with the intervals until you find the optimum for you.

None of which is to detract from the idea. As someone once said, brilliant ideas are almost always simple ones.

If you would order a wedding dress over the phone and simply ask for «medium, that'll be right» then 220-age will fit just as well.

I've made the point before, but the Galloway NYC site is more useful in a lot of ways than his own.

Just to be contrary, my max hr does roughly correspond to 220 minus age. But I'm weird so if it works for me it most likely doesn't for you!
