Non-runner
Never run with a smartphone since I broke the LCD film/screen, I don’t suppose that my new £5 PAYG emergency running phone would be up to parkrun scanning scratch? At least no-one will want to nick it...

On free range scanning; Exmouth is similar to the Exeter story. Down the promenade, across the road and into the activity centre. Certainly not that clear. I’ve been to some 45ish different events and the majority I find use their environmental landscape to manoeuvre people into the scanners. Mine are largely South West / Wales / Sussex etc. Not yet encountered one so regimented as these others. Perhaps it’s a northern thing?! |

Any thoughts or comments on the parkrun forever email that went out yesterday? I followed the link to see what the suggested donation was and it defaults to £6 a month, £72 a year. I am, and I guess like many others, quite confused by the parkrun financial model. As parkruns have started up closer and closer to my home, my "home" parkrun has changed but I still regularly visit older runs so interact with a variety of events with a big range of maturity from Black Park on 508 events to Higginson with 26. The new events all have to get some financial backing to cover the start-up costs and the established events seem to have a reasonable kitty to cover their needs. The donations page wiki.parkrun.com lists them so e.g. Black Park has £1645 available. It is true the funds are not gushing in, more drips and drops, but they are clearly in the black. So it seems to be a central issue and those central costs seem to be on two fronts: 1) day to day parkrun running infrastructure such as website, results processing etc. which are clearly needed 2) non-running related activities which encompass the whole ethics side of parkrun parkrun has central sponsors and a £3 million grant from Sport England so I assume that money covers (2) above which leaves (1) and I am not sure how many £72 a year donations are needed to fund a web-server and a results database. |

I am more likely to make a one off donate to my local parkrun where I can see where the money is spent than to headquarters where I am not sure what it’s spent on.

I've not had a "parkrun forever" email - though I did get the usual weekly one (including the "10 ways to discover your parkrun mojo"). Offering a voluntary subscription model is getting more and more common - loads of the podcasts I listen to have that though services like patreum (sp?) - where consumers choose whether or not to make a payment. I've no cyncism about central salaries or any agenda by the central team to "make money" out of parkrun - so naively assume that if they are seeking funds its because they need them to maintain things and grow. |
