Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Fizz :-)
At Corby, we all have to shout out, "no barcode, no time, NO EXCEPTIONS" at the end of the briefing :-)

It would be great if there were some way of scanning your phone though - I hadn't planned on parkrunning when I woke up at a campsite 1 mile from the parkrun, and 7 miles from home...

parkrun HQ have argued that the process of grabbing phones from holders, switching them on, bringing up the image, etc adds undue delay to the process (some of which I do "get" as a solid reason for not using phones), but as a "plan B" backup I agree it would be helpful. Those reasons were slightly ironic for me too as I used to keep my paper barcode in the battery compartment of my phone, so it was just as long for me to get the barcode out ready for scanning as it would have been getting the phone screen to display it!

There was other thoughts about the barcodes having ICE and names on which to me didn't hold water as when i did have a barcode on paper I used to print it as small as possible and cut off those bits!

Definately agree with that. I have my Tesco clubcard on my phone so it can’t be too far fetched

Yeah I've been stuck in a queue behind somebody with their clubcard on their phone too... Fumble for phone, switch it on, find the app, display the clubcard, give to the checkout assistant who peers at it for a while, tries to scan it twice, wipes the scanner and tries again, and then gives up and types the number in hunt-and-peck style for each of the 18 digits. And gets it wrong and has to do it again :-)

If you think you will only ever have your phone on you, just tape a barcode to the back - job done!

As fewer and fewer people have computers or printers at home, print-free options are becoming more and more necessary for all sorts of applications. I'd love to see barcodes on phones being accepted.

The problem I see it with scanning phone screens is that until such time as all possible permutations of equipment are going to work, then its a non-starter. For instance, the unofficial scanner/timer Android app that I've tested can quite successfully scan barcodes on phones. However, I haven't tried all that many, not changed brightness, not experienced different weather.

The Tesco Clubcard App (or at least the payment app which I use) 'hijacks' your phone's screen brightness control so that it can be scanned. So it might need to be a parkrun participants' "app".

And that would depend on all events having the scanning app, as I can confirm that the handheld scanners don't work on a phone screen.

Untill all events have this functionality, then there would have to be messages on the parkrun website to say "this event can scan barcodes on phones", or for there to be a list of phone compatible events, and maybe even a list of phones which can be used.

And then every week folk will turn up and say "my other event lets me".

It's a long way off, I fear...

The scanning system isn't great but taking economics and nature of the event it works as well as it can, not all event scanners will scan a barcode from a phone ( mind you not all scan from paper / wristbands/ tags in some light conditions or if sweaty/wet ). Cost of upgrading each event would be high and let's face it, all they ask on our part is that we remember to bring a slip of paper or one of the official tags/bands with us each week. A little discretion and flexibility would be nice but I see so many taking to social media ( this thread not included in that ) to attack volunteers for not doing 'this or that' in ( i suppose ) the belief that social media bullying might win, it becomes difficult for RD/ED to know if it is a one-off situation or that person regularly tries to bend the rule so, there has to be consistency and while the rule is in place it should be adhered to. Unfortunately it causes core teams a lot of grief, several young DoE volunteers were verbally abused at one local event to the extent that they no longer volunteer to scan. It can be quite amusing though when you hear someone complaining and saying that they always scan from the phone at x parkrun, not knowing that the person they are berating is the ED at x parkrun. As I wear my band at all times I have no excuse :)
