Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

As per Deegee, they will have to come up with a solution eventually. I was just thinking as to how many people under the age of 30 have a pc and printer these days? Pcs are now old tech outside of the office environment and I'd be willing to bet that most households under the age of 40 don't have Pcs. Especially with parkrun trying to break down barriers to participation, they could be losing a whole generation, as the younger age groups expect most things to be accessible on their phone these days.

I've just realised writing that, that I am an official old codger😀

Completely disagree about no barcodes no time attitude, to me it was all about getting people to take part and even adding 20 people didn't use to take that long.

Don't get me wrong barcodes save time and I think if you have a regular who was taking advantage of a bit of flex then smack him/her down.

We were also stopped from doing it by parkrun HQ and I am sorry but people/events should be allowed to make a choice on certain things.

(What, actually having a PC and a printer marks you down as old these days?? Something with a decent size screen you can see and proper keyboard and an ability to use proper programmes and websites instead of limited apps? Enjoy new technology kids - convenient and worse!)

As for not having access, people without a home PC and printer will often have access to a work one, or since you can print wirelessly from your phone, may just have a cheap printer anyway.

I was funman at my local parkrun on Saturday, pretty smooth, only had to stop three people skipping and only one looked puzzled as to why I had done it (but that may have been the heat). Any others sorted themselves out.

Even though I have a printer and laminator I found that the plastic tag (3 for £4.26) is a much more convenient solution because you can just pin it anywhere

When a parent starts threatening a volunteer because little johnny hasn't got his barcode for juniors, "but the parkrun down the road let me get away with it, so you bloody well should too"...

No barcode, no time, no exceptions. They should add no phones to that strap line.

I won't name the parkrun but the volunteer was the Event Support Ambassador.

Your local library will have printing services available.

There aren't many rules to remember, it's not that difficult! I always say to the scanners if anyone has an issue with them refusing to scan off a phone then send them to the RD and I will tell them exactly the same thing (in the most pleasant way possible). If they wish to complain they can email the ED or HQ (who will tell them exactly the same thing). I find most people (and I get about 1 a week on average) are fine with it, especially if you keep smiling and are unwavering.

I doubt too many people don't have a printer these days either available at home, at work or via a friend. You can print from your phone too you know?

Running without a barcode is open to anyone who wants to, all you do is miss out on the "official" result and a counter towards the next t-shirt.
