Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Has anyone made their own roman blinds (or roller blinds for that matter)?

I'm planning to make a roman blind for our new bedroom, the window is 1.6m square.

I'm busy reading the internet for advice, but if anyone here has made them before I have lots of questions.

Yes I have. For a roller blind you need a fabric stiffener. For a Roman blind you just have to measure very precisely!
It’s been a while since I did it though so not sure if I can help too much, I think I followed it out of a book (before the time when everything was on YouTube)

Thanks Meglet!
For your roman blind, did you use rods fr each segment, or did you just sew the little rings on directly?

I have a suspicion that it will hang better with rods (and that is how most online tutorials do things), but my fabric is already really thick (https://www.spotlightstores.com/nz/sold-by-the-metre/florentine-triple-weave-curtain-fabric/BP80484273) so I wasn't going to add a lining. Most patterns use the lining to make the rod pockets. This means that if I use rods, I'll see the stitching for the rod pockets on the front. Or, worse, I use the fabric to make rod pockets and disturb the pattern.

Yes you need rod for each section or you won’t have straight edges, but only thin ones, and a proper rod at the bottom. I seem to remember I used some sort of tape vertically that had loops that you ran the cord through. I think you can use tape to make pockets. I’ve moved and left it at the old house so can’t check!

I haven’t made my own but for my daughter’s room years ago I bought one from Ikea and covered it with a panel of blackout lining and some fabric of my choice. That might be an option for you but it made it an awful lot easier.

Just arrived

I ordered them for my scrap blanket, but they’re too pretty to use as scraps!
