This was from the fb post I remembered - for some reason can't post a link to it - this is a coach's point of view:
"I'd agree with a low profile shoe as well. For new rowers though, it makes very little difference and usually isn't worth the complexity of worrying about shoes when there's so much more to think about. But if you're looking for that extra second or pound of force in an already mastered stroke, then the low profile shoe may help get you there. I am not opposed to bare feet either but definitely not fun on the heel for most people! I would caution against wearing a lifting shoe though because while the rigid sole is helpful for the actual drive portion with the full foot down, the rigidity of the sole doesn't allow for any mobility in the foot itself if the heels need to lift to reach full compression and the built-in lift in the heel changes the angle of the drive which may lead to more vertical movement than desired."

I'm just using old running shoes. Never thought to try others, I have old converses somewhere might give those a go. It was actually something that I was going to ask but Nellers beat me to it 😉.

Jef: Sidebar updated and well done, mate. That as a base marker is pretty bloody impressive!
Quite impressed that I've made a non-running shoe topic on Fetch such a thing!
So if there's any consensus at all from the group here it's that whatever works for you is fine, but less heel lift is probably a good thing.

I used to use my running racing shoes which are quite low profile, but currently using Reebok Crossfit Nano Webs which have a firm sole and they feel good on the erg (found them cheap on eBay.. I don't like paying much for trainers 😂).
Well done on the 2k Jef, a very strong effort!

Just checked my shoes. They are some cheap Under Armour things with almost no sole.
Re 2k. Thanks. Just a guess pace thing. I think last one was 2018. At least I’ll have an idea on pacing in a couple weeks time.

It wasn't so bad Jef. It had warmed up to about -1 by the time I'd finished.

30 minutes at r18 this morning in a much more civilised 8-10 degrees. Lats in particular felt it today. I think that has more to do with the first sets of pull ups in 3 weeks yesterday than any of the rowing build up.
I’m coming to the conclusion that my normal mode of training these days is “cautious return from injury”.

Well done Nellers, you're making good progress! It was warm out today I rowed outdoors in my vest.
A 60 min row for me today.
On yesterday's 8k I forgot to wear my hr strap but strangely the PM was constantly displaying a HR of 115 - 125 and it averaged out at 119, my Garmin watch had a flat battery so it couldn't have been from that, anyone else seen a phantom HR on the erg?

Nellers. “ cautious return from injury “ 😁 I think I can relate to that !
Craggy, nice metres ! .. re phantom HR. Yes! My old Polar strap used to just make stuff up ! I think it was due to an imperfect fit.
My new Garmin and better still , the Wahoo, are almost faultless when compared to the Fenix on my wrist.
