I've sent a message to Garmin, telling them what the problem is. Will report back in three days, allegedly.

Don't be surprised if it takes longer. Garmin UK support used to be pretty quick, but when I've had to use them recently, it's taken over a week and come with profuse apologies about being exceptionally busy at the moment.

I've found its better to phone them. Always had excellent service when I've phoned but often no response to emails.

I've always got straight through...but then again I think I've phoned at about 2:30 pm on a Friday which is probably not their busiest time!

They used to be fantastic on the phone, but I've been on hold for ages the last few times.
They also managed to lose my 910 for several weeks, eventually sent out a replacement, and now within 4 weeks its showing the same physical fault as the last one. Keep putting off ranging them again!

They reported back in 2 days! First suggestion was to try another USB cable. Luckily one of my camera cables is the right fit. Next suggestion was to plug the cable directly into the device, not via the mount. Um, I told you it's a Forerunner 305, there is no port on the device itself.
In the meantime the laptop has sung a little tune when I plugged the new USB in, so it sounds like it's recognised more than just something to charge up. At the second attempt the Garmin Connect site opted to sync my device, and now the runs are downloaded onto Fetch, so its a temporary happy ending.
One difference I've noticed though, is that the Garmin sync download doesn't record any pause time, whereas the plugin version does. Does this matter? Probably not, unless you like to look back over old runs and compare how daisy-like you were on particular runs.

If I pause a run it displays funny on the Fetch graph in the training log, but correctly on strava so if it's the same thing it's down to how this website is interpreting the raw data. In some of the splits the paused time is included and in other sections it isn't.
