Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Lalli - have they been infected by someone else? If so, their penalty value increases. Squish them quick. On the plus side, when you do squish them, you get the increased value (I think)

No R4R, I think squishing is 4 points per bug even when they are infected.

Westmoors, whilst I agree that Fetchpoint is to encourage running in your local area (cf Conquercise), I agree with Zoom that the bias is too much in the favour of local running. To get the equivalent points of the 200 point bonus for squashing one bug daily you would need to run 100miles (daily) outside of anybody's home circle.

Yes, there should be an emphasis on running locally, and in particular for "playing the game" by adjusting your route to target markers rather than just running normally and expecting to get lots of points, but IMO you shouldn't need to run 100miles daily to get the same number of points as somebody who could do it in less than 2miles.

But you don't have to play the game!

I agree with Zoom, and I also think the penalties are out of proportion with the rewards.

I ran a 5 mile route, briefly popping out of my circle yesterday to clear bugs, I think that is playing the game. If I was planning a long route, outside of my circle, I wouldn't even consider FetchPoint. Any points picked up by chance would be a bonus.

I don't agree with the argument about conquersize being the game for those who want to run outside of their circle - once you've covered the immediate areas outside of the home circle you have to run far too far to get to the next zones.

You could also earn 200 points by seeing one of your relays move 50 miles - and you don't have to do that yourself. Running it into the path of a popular bike route is easy credits. And it doesn't have to happen in one go - actually, if it happens in increments, you get more.

Or you could target traffic lights, as my lovely wife has done. She's been nurturing a traffic light at the stadium, and currently picks up 60+ points every time a Bedford Harrier logs a run.

Or you could water those flowers that you've planted, making their net value more. One credit for planting them, but they can be worth 20 each with a few revisits.

Earning the bug bonus doesn't mean you have to spend all your time clearing them. If you get on top of them, you only have to clear one a day, and so given that you start at the centre of your home circle, and *have* to leave it to squish bugs, I prefer to see them as a springboard to exploring. I run about three times a week, and when I do I round up my bugs, and take them out of the circle somewhere, then either head for home or head off on a long run.

There is also nothing in the rules to stop you moving your home circle as often as you wish. So if going somewhere completely new is your goal, you could move your circle. The bugs will respawn immediately, and you have the opportunity to explore AND to get the bonus. Move the circle the day before, and you'll get some gems and other markers too.

One of the main things I responded to when rebuilding the rules was the fact that you didn't necessarily need a strategy when playing the game. There were so many markers, and so many points for absolutely everything, that it wasn't necessary to plan ahead. Now you need to have a plan, and the first question I always ask when people say that they're not getting on with the game is "what's your playing strategy?".

Getting the balance right is virtually impossible, but I hope that the general feeling is a positive one.

Thanks for the feedback Fetch. Despite what others suggest, I want to continue playing the game! I'm not sure I agree with all your points, but your final paragraph is the key one... and I'd add "you can't please all the people all the time"... keep up the good work.

If you have no near neighbours, fetchwise, then traffic lights don't come into play.

While you're here fetch, what are the rules about new jewels appearing i.e. when do we get any, how many etc or is it random?
