Suggestion on BBC podcast this morning that some cars right at the back would be best to stop after lap 1 and then lap 2, bolt on the hardest tyres and try to use the free air to get to the back of the pack with everyone ahead of them needing 2 stops to their zero. Possible I guess? At worst it adds a little uncertainty and avoids the lap 1 problem that last year's red flag created. Still potential for it to end up in the usual style of Monaco race, but I don't mind that as even when it is "dull" I still have a nagging hope or expectation that someone could hit the barriers at some point and cause the result to get mixed up. I'm not keen on the artificial format actions just to mix up the racing. I'd rather it was a straight "fastest car + driver" wins. But I'm sure I'd adjust to it. ![]() |

The whole concept of formula racing is that it is artificially constrained so I don't mind the tyre and pit stop regs. We've already got the two compound rule so mandatory stops isn't too much to add on top of that. I guess the issue at Monaco is that "fastest car and driver in quali" is what wins (typically) so adding some jeopardy to Sunday (which should be the marquee event after all) is probably the best way to do it these days, given the cars are pretty bulletproof in terms of reliability. |

The problem the last few years at Monaco has been it's an easy Sunday drive. No-one pushes as they can't overtake and they won't be overtaken. So it's not high action pushing to the limits and trying to avoid the barriers, but a slow easy drive giving the barriers lots of room. 2 stops means there should be mixed strategies. It's not just forcing people to speed up on the outlap/inlaps and then slow down again - if someone does an extra 10 laps in free air everyone needs to go close to the barriers for those 10 (or 12) laps. I think more generally having the same race 23 times a year is becoming quite repetitive. I'd like there to be a mix of races through the year. Some races could have 2 mandatory stops. Some could not require a change of tyres at all. Some could require a drive through the pit lane without stopping (whilst track is green) at some point. Having a mixture of types of grand prix seems reasonable - a mandatory tyre stop and two compounds is a relatively new thing anyway. |

Yeah, I get that it's because Monaco is zero overtaking, but I don't agree that the Formula 1 is "artificially" constrained. Regulations for max engine size / type, weight, length, width, electronic aids etc. are how you create a formula or class of racing. That's constrained for a reason - level playing field. Then there are safety features like crash protection, halo, etc. Constrained for a good reason - safety. I actually thought the two tyres was a reg for safety too (might be wrong on that though) as in tyre longevity. Even DRS was a feature to balance out the aerodynamic disadvantage of slipstream. But then multiple mandataory pit stops feels like "Pit stop racing" rather than car racing. Or the power up/overtake zone (like Formula E) all feels a bit too Mario Kart for me. What next - drive backwards one lap, do a doughnut at the show off area, drop banaskins for the cars behind?! ![]() |

Interesting situation in the F2 sprint race. 3rd place driver (Lindblad) was given a 10 second penalty early on. He then backed the pack up and let 2nd pull ahead by over 10 secs. With 8 laps to go he put his foot down to try get a gap on those behind him. It sort of worked because he ended up dropping to 8th but that still gave him a point. Before he started pushing the 10 secs would have dropped him much lower than 8th. The team were obviously using the difficulty of passing round Monaco to mitigate the penalty which seems to me both very clever and against the spirit of the rules. |

Qualifying was amazing yesterday for F1. Thousandths of a second traded by Morris, Leclerc and Piastri and Verstappen only 5th is all to my liking. Even looking forward to the race! Too technique Porhunter, if rather unorthodox! ![]() |

I've reached deep down into my pockets and stumped up for the NowTV sports sub for this month to watch the race live. I could find an illicit stream but I love Monaco with all it's pitfalls so wanted to watch live. Quali was great yesterday. Expecting Lando to find a way to lose the race today though. Fingers crossed he doesn't!
