Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

The channel 5 program about dogs behaving badly is really useful in terms of dealing with this kind of thing too Roberto.

I now have refusal to go into sleeping room voluntarily unless tastey food involved. Cracking up right now am in middle of total hellish upgrade for work and need to concentrate. 5 am wakeups, barking, sit down and refusing to budge on walks, chaos between her and cat whenever anyone moves, into everything and still peeing in the wrong place immediately after being outside is getting me down. I have shouted more than once which I know I shouldn't do. If I had a minute to myself would be tempted to go for a long drive just for a bit of peace.

That does sound hard shyfire.

I also have the sit down and refuse to budge on walks and have to use food to get Albie into his crate or pen for calm down/sleep (and it doesn't always work). It's hard to know what to do isn't it. How much sleep does Callie get? I definitely find behaviour goes downhill fast if he doesn't get enough. It doesn't help when they won't settle though (that was Albie the last 2-3 evenings).

My lifeline at the moment is the dog walker who visits or takes him out. She visits twice a day when I'm away at work, but today when I'm working from home she takes him out for 1-2 hours (not walking all that time of course! Just hanging out and doing a short walk with some selected other dogs) to give me some peace to do some work which is really worth it for me and then tires him out so he sleeps afterwards.

The good thing about this thread is that you can see that lots of people have issues with their dogs. I used to often see people walking their well behaved dogs and thinking it must just be me with a hyper dog! Nice to know we all have problems.

I have found age is the biggest cure. They seem to just figure out how to behave once they get to a certain age - adolescence is a pain!

You are very right there about age. Wanda is eight now and we think she is just about starting to figure it out....... but most probably get it quicker than that!

It’s just like parenting. It’s easy to feel like you are doing a shit job.

I have a friend whose wife is a vet. She was quite judgy about Ernie’s behaviour during a vet appointment when he was quite young. I was out walking with the friend and their collie puppy (5/6 months) recently and felt quite smug as the puppy ran away, had zero recall and then dragged him about on the lead. It’s easy to forget the difficult stages and that all dogs are different. Their previous dog was easy to train but the new one not so much.

And then they start getting old and Set In Their Ways.

Lazy Daisy reminded me that we always wondered whether Floss and Jess communicated telepathically (although Flossie is 'much' better behaved than Jess apart from where eating everything is concerned) They're still at it. Flossie, along with Jess, apparently also insisting THIS way on walks and refusing to budge in any other direction.

30kgs plus of stubborn dog is quite hard to budge.

I got shouty the other night because Rory wanted to go out 4 times (note, he didn’t NEED to go out, he wanted to go out and run around the garden barking at invisible invaders.) It’s not ideal, but then nor is being woken by your dog shouting his head off at 3am.

It's amazing how a few cuddles can sort things out. I love arlo, but I've really disliked him recently with how he has been behaving. And I ignored him this morning when I came downstairs and just let my partner deal with him. He really sensed it I think. We have had a lovely day and he has cuddled up on me all afternoon while I've worked.

Partner is going to do the bed time routine tonight.

I frequently tell Rory ‘I love you, but your behaviour makes me feel sad.’

Obviously he doesn’t care. Because he’s a dog. :-)
