Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Highest June and July for me ever (both round the 170 mile mark) Just trying to get fit, plus no races to stay fresh for. Most of you will be over 200 though.

Just tested optical HR on 10 sprints, it failed woefully. If it's down to lag, there's still hope it will work for an 800m race as it'll have time to catch up. If it's down to arm movement then it's not going to work.

SPR, make sure the watch is really tight if you want good optical. I always say one notch past comfortable! Loosen it off after the session.

I recko 800m is too short even for a chest strap as it takes time for the hr to get to the right level. Probably about a mile for me. Might be different for a proper 800m runner though that runs way quicker than me

Baz - What you describe is true lag, not strap lag. Your HR does take time to get the right level. I've used the strap for short intervals before so I know it works. Mine didn't move at certain points.

CW - I had it pretty tight specifically for that reason, I doubt tighter would have made much difference in this scenario. I did loosen it off after running due to how tight it was.

The intensity of a 800 race is different to the first mile of your X mile run as well.

Ok SPR, sounds like it wasn’t that.

Just out of interest I looked at my HR for one of my quickest miles and it took my 1m30s to go above lactate threshold, ie just over 400m. I then stayed above it for the reminder, ending up at my max HR.

This was in 2015 so I probably had a strap on rather than optical.

This is my first 800m ever with strap from 2010 before I stopped wearing straps in races.

Never been sure about the 215 at the end but I definitely was dead in the last 100m (I think I still have a fear of going too hard in 800 races due to this race).

That’s what I meant SPR. I Doubt I have have much faster than 2:55 for 800m and I doubt if I could. I would not expect to be hitting a high hr for that although maybe after 6x 800 I may do.

Baz - You need the anaerobic power and endurance to get up to speed, which is something I guess you don't work on at all. It's something I could work on more myself!

Ooh, I could still beat you in 800m 400m 200m 100m then Bazo? If we could just do a marathon like that footballer, 800m per day for 52 days could take you on at marathon too?! ;-)

New (replacement) Garmin Vivoactive 3 seems to be logging HR better as well as the altitude it was repaired for. Interesting. :-) G
