Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Well done larks, puts my double header to shame. Fabulous on both counts, you are in the zone.

As for me, went pretty disastrously wrong, two 10ks, first 10k had palpitations on the first hill (at 1.5 miles, it is a brute - too much caffeine before race the culprite), and then tempo-ed in for rest of the race for a respectable, but nothing more 43.55, then this morning's offroader, which perhaps I should have given a miss, on the coastal paths, but I don't like missing out, I needed know for sure that is was the caffeine that caused it, and was right, no repeat performance of palpitations, but legs were dead, HR higher than usual. Ah well I don't give up easily, I am dogged. Now a weeks recovery til an offroad half. Decaf everything, no alcohol, and strictly healthy eating until then.

Nice one Larks, I usually struggle doing short fast after long slow (relatively), I find it much easier the other way round. Say parkrun Saturday marathon Sunday

First 100m of a warm up jog I didn't think I'd be starting the race, but I tried to break into a much faster pace and things loosened up. Was in two minds whether to be stupid and run the race, but I know the officials, knew I was only like to beat two of the entrants even if I'd be fresh and set my mind to pace to 20 minutes which really should be a comfortable pace for me at the minute so I didn't blow up trying to run 18:30 by mistake.

Also ran in trainers rather than spikes for a nice bouncy feel.

It's not something I'll be doing again as a double header, but nice to have ticked off something unusual like that!

Tough weekend up there Chris - good to know those palpitations weren't anything more sinister.

Larks thats a very decent weekend's running. Well done on your ultra. I'm impressed you made it around the 5k at all...

I am a bit confused re: strides chat. Surely they have different uses depending on how and when you are doing them?

To me they are: fast, relaxed, controlled running

I use them when coaching to help runners cycle through warming up the muscles completely before starting the session, post drills. At the same time, I use them on track to assess form and relaxation and often set next weeks drills based on failures to match the movement models.

For myself I would use them with walk backs before a race to "feel" the relaxation I am looking for when running and also within an easy run for example to keep the legs ticking over on an A race week.

As long as you are clear why you are doing them I think they can be a useful tool in the box to have.

Yes to those last 2 uses Curly. P&D has them in your last example but not just in A race week but in a week where there is a tune up race or other fast or hard session later in the week. Maintains or develops good speed form while taking nothing out if you. :-) G

Great ultra result Larks and crazy to do a fast 5k next day. Crazy and impressive. I love that 20 mins is a jog for you! :-) G

Lol, not entirely a jog, but it would be a bit too much sandbagging for me at the minute to say sub 20 is a big challenge. Though I couldn't have found much else yesterday.

No "Tuesday legs" for me either today. Very surprising!!

First session of P&D18 week plan for me this morning: 6k tempo in 24:57 4:09m/km (sorry no idea what that is in miles!). Good session. Early days but feeling good and excited to take on the challenge of the marathon again.

I think a lot of my improvements over shorter distances can be attributed to the strides built into the P&D schedules. And over last few months 18-19sec 100m strides have gotten easier.

on another note, had what i thought would be my hardest interval session on friday 3miles steady followed by 6 x 800m sprints and i loved it. managed an avg of 2:50mins for the 800m blocks which i thought was pretty impressive considering i was no where near that level a couple of months ago.

Unfortunately, p&d has me doing the exact same session later on today.
