I've only had a GPS watch for about 2 and a half years, before that I had a Timex that also read HR. I never use it on track so it only really gets used for XC and the hilly road relays. If I ran a flat road race or anything long, I might decide to use the data.
I love data but only after the run. My Garmin only shows elapsed time when racing and during training it shows the time of day.
I did use HR at this point last year to really slow down my training pace while I was building mileage, but once I got used to how it felt for 6 miles rather than 3 miles I was happy to run and let the data confirm I'd got it right. I don't wear HR for racing as strap slippage is a distraction I don't need.
I think data is great and I'm happy to use it when necessary but I do think it's important to learn how different efforts feel.

Our club does a blind mile (Garmin less) the week before London mara. You say your target pace to the timer, hand over Garmin, and then do a mile at your target pace. You get two attempts, and the closest one to their target gets a bottle of wine. No-one ever gets it bang on, in fact within 10 seconds is usually good enough for the wine. It's got to the point where some are so unconfident of doing it they will put in a "wrong mile" just to drag the others off too :-).

we do a 5 miler - same principle but anyone faster than the predicted time is DQ'd. Over the last few years people have trained themselves much better but the majority get DQ'd. I've never come close to winning as I'm always too slow.
Things aren't looking good for Abo on Sunday. There's a weather warning in place for high winds on Saturday with strong gusts continuing in to Sunday. The prevailing forecast is for a 20 mph crosswind pretty much all the way (it's a N -> S loop with a strong westerly). It's not quite bad enough for me to can it completely now but I'm defo on the way. Have preliminarily sorted out a trip to Valencia, it's expensive though leaving it this late and would mean that I'd have to get back training for a couple of weeks then taper again. Basically. Bollocks.
