I suffer from the 'positive split' syndrom. I think that (part of) the question I need to answer is not 'why did I go so slow in the second half' but 'why did I go so fast in the first half'!

there is of course the non-training factors as well - I think a big factor in me improving this year was shaving a few more pounds off and a bit of body fat. Granted, I'm already fed up with protein shakes but I reckon if I lose another few kg I'd improve. And if I went to bed at a reasonbale time (instead of pissing around on t'internet) I would actually wake up at 6.20 and get up instead of resetting the alarm for an hour (like the last 3 mornings).

Lou - I am as skinny as a rake already abd folk give me a hard time for being underweight. Losing more weight isn't an option for me sadly.

Thanks for the advice inso and wes
Wes - Funnily enough my bro gave exactly the same advice as you to improve my marathon training. He's a lot quicker than me. He's running sub 71 halfs and looking for sub 2.30 at vlm. We had a good chat on our run home from work and he reckons I need to increase the mileage slightly and do more marathon paced runs. I read a while ago about your 40-40-40 sessions. I might try a few of them. They sound good. I may well be tapping into you for ideas in the future as our times are quick similar but you have acheived the holy Grail for marathon running - something I want badly!

That was a big one for me too. Midweek PMP runs for 3/4 of the week's long run, not every week, but several times through the cycle.
Of course i didn't end up doing enough of either LSR's or PMP's, but the ones i did do definitely helped and i'm convinced that's what gave me the ability and confidence to run such even splits on the day.

When i say 3/4 of the week's long run btw i mean 3/4 of the week's long run distance, done seperately during the week, not 3/4 of the actual long run itself!
