Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

When I had appraisals I generally said what I thought they wanted me to say... followed by a long series of rants about how shit things were. Bit self-defeating but I felt better for it.

My best appraisal happened when I was waiting for a job offer. My boss has been asked for a reference by my new employer and he knew I was about to resign. So he felt safe letting me know that he was also moving on and the appraisal was pointless.

He asked me for a favour and that was if he could give me the crappiest mark because he had to give it to someone apparently. I agreed as I didn't care a jot by then as long as the reference he gave wasn't jeopardised by it.

He left soon after and a new boss installed almost immediately. On his first day he contacted me to discuss my poor appraisal score. Went through my options and then finally suggested 'maybe voluntary redundancy might be something to consider'

:-)

If he'd waited 24 hours I would have handed in my resignation anyway. I took the 'Separation Package' they offered. £13k that cost them :-)

I never had the brass neck to ask for voluntary redundancy. I suppose I should have done. You never know.

What a brilliant story. And in doing so, you also saved someone else their job :-)

Big Leggy - sounds like your old place used “forced ranking” - did you work for a US firm as they tended to use that
