Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Pensions aside we have no real investments to speak of, some small amounts in a low coupon gilt that will give good returns when it matures, it's in an ISA wrapper, although actually not required for low coupon as they are cgt exempt.

I'm thinking about some more in higher coupon gilts in future that I may not hold to term. We're just changing provider because Jarvis closed, so once that is set up I'll look at gilt markets again.

Rest is all a ladder of fixed terms savings and premium bonds (effectively our emergency fund).

Because we have no other income at the moment we can get a decent amount of interest tax free (zero band +£5k starter rate +£1k). I'm amazed the government hasn't gone after that little Brucie bonus yet, especially as it rewards wealth rather than work, but if we have to pay tax on savings interest that is fine with me.

Anyway it's a very safe way to cover the bridge prior to pensions, especially as we are beating inflation at the moment with all of them (just luck on timing to be fair).

My IFA has some of my funds in EIS’s.

It’s spread across a number of companies, generally the highest risk investment of all, but very tax efficient.

Most will struggle to pay back the investment, but if one or two go well and get into buyout etc territory then returns are huge!

None have come in yet but a couple look promising.

The price of gold has gone galactic!

Says the adverts on the radio all. the. time.

So I went to Mrs B and asked if she had any gold jewellery around that she never wore.
Well, yes, including a little bracelet her boss gave her when she was 21. Turns out it was 22 carat.

We took a little pile of ancient and broken stuff and said bracelet to the jewellers in Stratford.

They took out a thing like a speed gun and held it against the gold (some of it we weren't even sure *was* gold because not all gold is fully hallmarked).

The speedgun thing is a handheld spectrometer and it gives instant readings of the elemental makeup of the object. 22 carat is 92% pure gold.

5 minutes later and we had 850 quid in the bank. Not a bad return for 5 minutes work!

Mrs B got a new phone and a suitcase out of it. I got nothing, despite being the ideas guy. Disgraceful!
