Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Nosmo - what a great name! The Maxine Nightingale tune was probably the first Northern Soul track I heard because it was a chart hit here when I was 10/11. I also remember hearing the Javells one too - probably at Northern Soul nights.

I think it was just the "Javells" until the lead singer (a guy named Stephen Jameson) was looking for a catchy improvement to the groups name, one day he saw a big NO SMOKING sign and came up with the "Nosmo King" handle. In terms of tailor-made NS tracks, I think this is one of the best.

The Maxine Nightingale record is a peculiar one. I remember it coming out only too well (I bought it from Woolworths) and it defo has the northern sound and beat, but apart from discos etc I can't ever remember hearing it a soul night. Probably a bit too commercial. Still a belter though!

Anyone else got any favourite tailor-mades? Please don't anyone say "Footsee" :-)

Re: Nosmo King: insofar as Wikipedia can be relied upon, the 4th bullet point down tells more about the Javells. ^

Just heard this on Black Cat radio, I think it fits the same genre as the Nosmo King track we played back in December. I remember it being played constantly at my local youth club back in the 70s :-)

Note that it was produced by Biddu. Does anyone remember the Biddu orchestra?
