Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Nope. Too late.

And being realistic, even deployment of renewables at scale *will* require extraction of large amounts of minerals and materials.

Large scale CSP is interesting but I think I read somewhere it’s not that efficient. The largest one globally is in a Chilean dessert Cerro Dominado. 16,000 reflectors, $800m cost, 6 years from first stone to power, 40k tons of salt, and 110MW of power produced.

Though I don’t think Scotland is the place for concentrated solar power, a couple of colleagues went over to Chile to help the project and kindly brought me a book back - from which I got those stats.

If anywhere needs their solar power concentrated it's Scotland.

Big parabolic mirror in space would be a good start :-)

Starting to research solar panels before going out for solar panel quotes - my house faces SSW approx 200 degrees in a sunny area so hoping I can benefit from them.

Any tips / what to avoid greatly appreciated :-)

If we'd still been a member of the EU, it would have been cheaper to install.

Pro tip

Thanks for your comments HappyG. No idea on my usage I’ve only lived here for a few days! I suppose I need to find the average kWH usage is for a 3 bed house then knock off a bit as there's just me.

Wasn’t aware of a loan - will do a Google for it when I have some time :-)

Fozzy - please keep cross thread beef (consumption of which needs to be reduced anyway ;-) ) out of an informative and useful thread :-)

About This Thread

Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
