Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

My wife is complaining that my bit of grass cutting and weeding at the weekend will deter the deer from wandering through the garden.

They have 20 plus acres of fields and woodland immediately outside the garden that they can feast on, so I think I will defend my bit of manicuring. Actually, even the bit I've done is still pretty overgrown. I think the deer are well served! :-) G

I do remember a story about a woman who was accused and convicted of witchcraft in the middle of a famine on the grounds her children were well nourished when all around were starving. After her execution the found jars of pickled slugs in her home. I can't find a reference for the story.... and this worldanvil.com certainly isn't it. ;)

But they're protein after all?

Last meat I cooked was honestly some minced sika from a local gamekeeper, presume he shot it as pest control. Win-win for us, not so much for the sika :-)

Is that like Baldrick and his slug balancing trick in Blackadder Goes Forth?

Some other options for protein you might like to try
- Cricket and locust - in the uk they are sold as flour and for your running needs there is a protein bar made of them.

- quorn
- soya produce - if using bean curd need to marinate
- lots of fast food options in the supermarkets

- microbial protein is in progress and might be the future

Had a fake meat pizza recently - Pizza Hut I think - and it was really good (of its type). I’m sure it’s all salt and fat really!

I have never taken to "fake meat" and don't like tofu... But I am very keen on pulses and seeds and nuts and eggs from my own chickens! I am eating slugs after all! But they have passed through the chicken's digestive system and are converted into eggs with nutritious dark, orange yolks!

I really like the slug story :)

It looks like this => books.google.co.uk might be the source of the story - not quite such bad news for the lady in the story after all! And Charles Dickens, yet.... :-)

The one time I had locust (knowingly) I decided it was just a bit spikey and not quite well done enough! They'd been roasted as snacks - I did try a few on general principle, but I think I'd prefer them to be formed into something less "pointy", so probably cooked differently. But in principle - yes, why not?

Mostly because we don't need to, is what I think. We can quite easily survive on fruits/vegetables, nuts and grains. But I guess we're not all veggies! -) G

About This Thread

Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
