Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

It's possible that taking a high price on solar panels now will pay for itself by more than the amount you save buying some a bit cheaper in a year. Timing the market sounds sensible in theory, often goes wrong in practice (you can end up never pulling the trigger)

But the other factor here is that demand for installations is pretty frenetic right now and I've seen plenty of pictures of bodge jobs on FB forums recently, if an installer can get to you in the next few months it might be because they are cowboys.

Yes finding a good installer is a bit of a challenge. I don’t know where to start really as there are plenty of people who offer it, question is who does it well?

I might knock on a few peoples doors locally who have them and ask if they rated the installer.

We're lucky here in Scotland fd, we've got the MCS scheme, which your installer has to be part of you want to get the gov't loan.

MCS is pretty rigorous. We did get two quotes, both companies MCS, and took up references from both of them. Both said up front the installs would be around 2 months for parts and fitting it in, as they are busy. Actual install is only 1.5 days - 1 day with some tidy ups / follow ups. References said they were tidy, professional etc. And both companies have been in business 10 years plus, are local, with decent financial status, so no reason to expect they disappear.

And also MCS means the guarantee is backed by the scheme, not just the individual builder/installer. :-) G

That's good fozzy. Then I would recommend MCS accredited supplier / installer Fields. :-) G

Fields would also find an installer that has been in the trade for awhile and not someone who started in the last 2 years.

Agree with everything HG has said.

FYI: gov.uk
Also my local council was apparently providing grants if your house has an EPC rating of E or less

My best friend's partner does off grid systems and will do.my solar, as a friend, he usually doesn't go this small.
I do not have any money right now. Taking out £15k on a mortgage is going to cost a small fortune so I am better off waiting 2 years for a small pot to mature...
I would NEVER make back the difference in savings as I only pay £90/month, half of which is standing charge, and only use 500 litres of heating oil a year.

In fact, I did some calculations years ago and if it hadn't bern for the £7k grant and feed in tariff I was eligible for, it would not have made economic sens.
It still doesn't, but I am doing it for the environment and because I want to be self sufficient WITH power...

Ours will pay for itself in 7-10 years. And it has a lifetime of longer than that. So we will net benefit from it (should be here 10 years plus). And it's the right enviro thing to do, of course! :-) G

About This Thread

Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
