Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

That is a useful reminder. It is hard to keep trying in the face on little noticeable progress.

Well, I'm determined to take heart from last Saturday's very hilly, muddy, night race, which worked out at about the same pace as one I did in Dec 2014, with similar height gain, when I was *lot* more running fit than I am now. I'm putting it down to getting used to running harder and suffering for a couple of minutes at a time ;-)

That's excellent news, Jubear.

This isn't particularly directed at you but I think it's easy to confuse discomfort with pain and once you start identifying a hard effort as painful then 'pain' assumes far more significance and it makes us just ease off a little bit... then progressively even more.

Whereas if you push beyond mild discomfort then that becomes the new 'bearable' in time....

Or something!

I think you are right - there's a lot to be said for telling yourself it's only making you puff a bit :-)

That's a really good point - for me at least 80% of what's holding me back is fear of discomfort!

Hmmm. Well I'm trying but that really is a huge amount of the battle for me - trying to distinguish I mean! I had a shocking run yesterday - when I was trying incredibly hard - and a lovely run today when I wasn't trying very hard at all. The paces were very similar!
