Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

For what it's worth I got a 21.02 5k PB in the Feb then ran a 3.56 debut Marathon in the May. By the time I ran my next marathon I'd got a 10k PB of 44.52 but I was outside 4 hours. Lots of other factors have an impact but it does certainly show that you've got the speed to have a good go at it, Tipsku.

Good luck.

Thank you Nellers and becca. I'll let you know how it went :)

I'm a runner with a slow bias, i.e. I'm not doing well on short distances compared to others. There are several runners in my club who beat me over 5k and 10k but I beat them in halfs and marathons.

So my prediction is based on the following: In previous years I had the following correlations between 5k/10k and marathon times:

spring 2012: 10k in 48:51, mara in 4:11:04 (in 28C heat, may have gotten closer to 4h in ideal conditions but probably not beaten it)
autumn 2012: 10k in 48:36, mara in 3:54:36 (ideal conditions)
spring 2013: no 10k, but 5k in 22:38, mara in 3:48:31 (ideal conditions)
autumn 2013: 10k in 47:23, mara in 3:44:55 (a bit on the warm side)

If I compare the 10k in autumn 2013 with 2012, I was over a minute faster in the 10k, which then yielded almost 10 min improvement on the same marathon course.

Now I'm looking at spring 2014: 10k in 45:09, over 2 min faster than the previous 10k, but I don't expect a 20 min improvement, 3:25 in a marathon is utopian at the moment. I think I could run another 10 min faster though, that's why I think 3:35 is feasible; going for 15 min improvement would be too risky.

If I go for it at 8 min/mile pace from the start, the HR will most likely shoot up too quickly. I would regret that at mile 20 the latest when I would start fading because I've burnt too many carbs in the early stages of the race. Since my stomach can only absorb a certain amount during the race, fuelling more to compensate the carb deficit will only lead to a detour to the dixies and not a PB. :-D

that's interesting - as my bias is completely the other way - over 5K I am so much more competitive than HM - and my WAVA times reflect that too! I guess that's because the majority of my runs are 5 - 10 miles - Never ran anything longer competitively than a HM

That's pleasing. :-) My SB today was only because I was tailrunning on my last outing.
