I read Kev's comments as it could be done, not he does it! Anyway, another believer in only physical barcodes allowed (ie no phones!). We make this statement as part of the breifing every week, just so people remember not to even ask

Chunkywizard - correct. I say it is ironic works on a phone but not on some of the parkrun merch sold to avoid the no barcode issue. Wasn't expecting the Spanish Inquisition

BexleyKev, as I said in my original post, I may have read your blog incorrectly.
Apologies, I wasn't trying to hang you out to dry.

12bar - after 10 years of listening to the parkrun psalms they have started to sink in. We actually send non complaints to stand on the naughty step and write out - it was the only thing I had to remember to bring.

LD-from pages back, the app does show a running total of runners timed. It's not massive font, but it is there.

Thanks Linds, I thought it ought to but my timekeeper was sure it didn't - I shall have to tease him about needing reading glasses 😉

Re the phones for scanning, Ellon parkrun have been asking for donations of old smartphones over the past few weeks, they've got a few now ready to use.

My local event is 'app friendly' rather than 'app only'. We let people know in the reminder email where they can download the app and we find most people are happy to use it. We still have the old school timer and barcode scanners if someone doesn't want to use the app. Our RDs generally prefer the app as it is easier to process the results but the difference is really so small as to not really matter either way. I was actually scanning this morning and planned to use the app for the first time (I usually RD) and it didn't work on the first two people I tried to scan so I switched to the old school scanner. Now I am home I have tested the app on my own barcode and it works just fine. All new events in Aus are app only now. We are about 18 months old and preceded the swap to app only events by about 6 months.
