Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

As Stuart mentions, we are lucky here on Fetch to be able to pick up great tips from a number of coaches who charge others for the privilege ;-) I think I'm right in saying tom_craggs' bespoke remote coaching rates are £65+VAT per month (from http://www.runningwithus.com/#!our-coaching-service/dzg60), which when compared to the cost of (some) gym memberships seems reasonable (and is about half your yearly estimate for face-to-face coaching :-)G). If I had the money and a short/medium term goal, then I'd certainly consider paying that much for coaching for a 6-18month time period, for example.

I go to a PT most weeks, he gets me doing strength work I would never do on my own and I also get a workout plan I can do at my leisure. He knows nothing much about running but he knows the areas to work on to make me a stronger runner.

I idea of having a running coach, someone to tell me what to run and when sounds appealing but I am hopeless at following training schedules and never sure how to fit in social runs with friends.

Thanks all. StuartL and Nelly, that's why my vote said that I "plan to pay a coach but less than 100 a month".

I do want to improve.

I don't lack motivation or commitment.

I have some reasonable understanding of running training plans.

I have access to a gym and am happy doing other strengthening and stretching activites.

I do enjoy feedback.

My club doesn't have free, personal coaching (i.e. I wouldn't get a tailored plan and be able to get weekly or 2 weekly feedback on progress against plan).

So my conclusion was an online coach or one where I can get an initial call or face to face hour then online thereafter. There is a guy in our club who would do that (on a paid-for basis).

Please keep your experiences and views on paid-for and club/free coaching coming. All very useful. :-) G

:-) G this might seem odd by way of response, but have you thought about becoming your own coach? You have plenty of experience of running and supporting others. I don't know about north of the border but the cost of the England Athletics coaching courses amount to less than what you are contemplating paying a coach for a year - and if your club don't have any coaches helping members at the moment then they may support you in that because the club would get more of a benefit.

It's obviously different and a bigger time commitment but you seem to commit a fair it of your time to supporting other runners at the moment anyway.

Our club would pay for me to become a coach, they're always encouraging it. It's not the cost, it's the time commitment. I actually quite like running by myself some of the time and even (whisper it) doing some things other than running!

But yes, I've considered it. And in other sports too - e.g. doing my Les Mills qualification, so I can teach bodypump. I have been doing it on and off (mostly on) for nearly 15 years! When I went to a pay as you go gym it was a real possibility. But now that I have a gym membership (a present from my wife) I get the gym classes for free, so less point.

Back to running coaching - would I get to run though? Our track coaches don't run with us (because everyone's interval finishes at a different time and she needs to be at the start/finish to offer advice and encouragement).

The most likely thing is that I'll do some "self led" groups at club again. I have led road interval and tempo sessions for the club in the past. Basically, it's whatever I have in my plan and bring others along. Then give them advice on tailoring session (speed, number of reps, distance, duration) to their ability. Works really well.

But the bit I'm "missing" is really someone to give me a tailored plan and some feedback on how I'm doing. But I can do that for myself too really. I think I'm just looking for some help, when I should really just get my finger out! I'm off to check what the poll is up to now. :-) G

Option Your Vote Votes Percentage

Yes, I use a paid-for coach or trainer - over £100 per month. Vote 3 12

Yes, I use a paid-for coach or trainer - less than £100 per month. Vote 1 4

Yes, I use a free or minimal cost coach or trainer e.g. through a club. Vote 3 12

I don't use one now, but would consider a paid-for coach or trainer - over £100 per month. Vote 1 4

I don't use one now, but plan to get a paid-for coach or trainer - less than £100 per month. 5 20

I don't use one now, but plan to get a free or minimal cost coach or trainer e.g. through a club. Vote 5 20

No, I would never plan to use a coach or trainer. Vote 7 28

So nearly half would never use coaching or only a club or other free coaching (48%). Only 16% currently pay for coaching at all.

And interestingly of those considering some paid-for coaching (24%), they have the opposite hope for the cost to those who currently pay for coaching (1:5 hoping for under £100 vs actual 4:1 who pay more than £100!)

Hmm, damn lies and statistics! :-) G

No, I would never plan to use a coach or trainer. Vote 13 34.21

So creeping higher from those who would not pay for a coach! 50% - 19 out of 38 would not use a coach or would use a club coach.

Less than 16% of respondents currently pay for coaching. And of the 8 people considering paying for coaching 7 out of 8 looking to pay less than £100 per month. (When of the 6 who do pay for coaching today, half pay more than £100 per month!)

I've floated a tempo session and I've got half a dozen club mates interested. We may just organise our own! :-) G

olde english
I ve dabbled with online coaching in the past but basically dropped them pretty quickly as I figured I knew the physiology of training perfectly well, I just lacked perspective on my own training. Fixed that by just being a little more chatty about training at my club and sorting out a weekly track session. same way as u HG i.e im doing this anybody else fancy it and adapting the session to fit other people. The mking training fit other people allows u 2 step back a little and apply some common sense 2 ur own training. In summary, nah I would never use a coach I find messing with my training plans far to much fun to let anybody else do it.

Ah, that's interesting OE. Thanks for the affirmation. I agree, working with others, and directing them a bit, is both enlightening and motivating. And if there's someone quicker than me sometimes I'll use them to push me on, or if someone a bit slower than me, I'll maybe be a bit more conservative. All more fun that doing it alone though!

I really don't think there's much information that I'm missing. Maybe that's arrogant, but we've all read a lot, chatted a lot here in Fetch and picked a lot up over the years. I think all a coach would give me is someone to encourage me, and I'm not sure I need that.

The vote stats above are quite interesting, aren't they? :-) G

Happy, I think you're on the right track, and it's certainly worth trying to get a good group together to motivate you all to improve - if sessions are done to time then attitudes in the group become more important than having equal abilities.

If it works out, you'll improve and have the satisfaction of helping others improve, of not you can always get paid coaching down the line and know that you tried to improve things first :)
I suspect you do already know the majority of what you need to - it isn't rocket science - run, mostly easy, some hard, don't neglect form, enjoy it (the much longer version of that is in my last blog!)
One last point, if you do set up a group, set up a specific Facebook/whatsapp/whatever group for it so you can continue conversations between sessions
