Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

My Personal Trainer having moved out of the area I feel somewhat bereft - I'd quite like to find a running coach - but so far google and Run England have drawn a bit of a blank. Ideally it would be someone willing to come to me or near me Warrington/Wigan/St Helens area. Do any local Fetchies have any suggestions or recommendations?

Are there any running clubs near you who would take you on board? they would obviously have their own coaches and would prob love the new custom.

There are a couple, but their sess.ions aren't terribly convenient in terms of times unfortunately.

I'm going to hijack AL's thread (just don't want to create my own and then find 0 replies! ;-) )

What proportion of Fetchies do or would use a coach? (I might do a vote thing to go with this, but I want to sort out my question first!)

I am always surprised at the number of people who pay for a PT or coach (40 pounds an hour? Even at only 1 hour a week that's 2k a year. Seems a lot of money to me. Though I guess if you get online coaching, just an email/phone call and a plan it might be less?)

Do you feel that what you get from it is worth 2k? What do you get that you couldn't get from a book? Obviously while a book can give you great information, it's not tailored (though most of them tell you how to tailor to your needs to) and a book can't check up on you and motivate you. But if it is mostly motivation, 2k seems like a lot of money to pay just to kick yer bum?

Anyhoo, very interested, because I could potentially get a coach. But I'm really struggling to justify the cost (I'm a right tight git!) Input gratefully received! :-) G

Happy, it's an interesting question.

As a club coach, I'm always amazed at the amount of folks who tell me about their new program their pt has developed for them when they've never come and even explored the free advice available from me. I think, though, that it comes down to perception of value - people feel they are getting a 'better' service because they are paying for it than they could get for nowt.

As for whether you should get a coach, if suggest that it depends on your goals in the longer term. If there are targets you want to hit, then it's definitely worth it to get a structured program specific to you and your goals. If not, then just run.

As to finding a coach, I'd start in your local club(s) then look towards paid coaches if there's nothing suitable locally. In these parts, asking gobi or tom craggs for advice would be a good starting point...

Just noted the date of AL's post.... Three years on she's a coach herself!

I reckon she joined a running club ;-)

For the record I agree with Stuart. I have had wonderful free coaching from both my first and second claim clubs and would be nowhere without them - but have currently moved on to a personal coach ( who also coaches at a big London club)

I pay a PT - we do weights once a week. He is not running specific, indeed his background is rowing, and he doesn't give me any running/coaching advice. His role for me is to get me doing stuff that keeps me strong and able to run uninjured. I pay him for his knowledge regarding weights etc and his equipment - I would never go to a public gym, but his converted industrial unit with no-one else there and no mirrors is "safe". Running trraining plans - I invent my own and then fail to stick to them!
