Do me a favour, Dr Who bubbled up nicely at the end of the last series, really? It was poor, all the way through.
His Dark Material is far, far superior, because it is a good book and a good story well written, the writing, if you can call it that, for Dr Who has been totally average for a good few series now.

That's the beauty of differing opinions, WS. We can both hold them.
What favour did you have in mind?

I'm with you on that WS. Not enjoyed Dr Who really since the days of Matt Smith; the through-narratives have been weak and non-compelling.

The favour would be to go back and have a look at the last series of Dr Who again.

Getting back to HDM, won't it almost always be the case that having a 'strong' book as a basis enhances TV productions?

No, there's a general election to follow: that'll provide more melodrama, comedy and tragedy than a hatful of new shows.

I am struggling to think of a book I really liked that got totally trashed on TV, then I remember I don't read a great deal of fiction, so hard to say. I loved Fever Pitch the book, the film was very good, but took a different angle (i.e. football), rather than not fitting in, which is what the book was about.
Same to for The Damned United...the film was funny, the book not at all at any point. I still liked the film, the book was brilliant.
This general election is just tragic.

Oh, lots of great books have been terrible movies or TV programmes. The Time Traveller's Wife was a lovely book, very moving. Terrible film. Um, Hobbit and Lord of the Rings weren't right, but for different reasons. The books were so deeply ingrained with me. 1984 movie was good, but never as good as the book. Really hard actually, to adapt a beloved book well! Everyone's a critic! G

My favourite author is Evelyn Waugh - have tv and cinema adaptations of his work been any good? Up to a point (Lord Copper).

1984, went through my mind as well, and in parts it was very good, the group hate stuff, the video imagery, and how downbeat the general feel was, but John Hurt was crap, I cannot put my finger on why, but he felt all wrong to me, but that could be my usual approach to films, in please don't employ a 'star' for the sake of it.
