Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Canute - I personally enjoy your posts. Sometimes they are a little advanced for me, I'll be honest, but almost always give me something to think about.

Trying to debunk ingrained but erroneous 'knowledge' is always going to be an uphill battle, but that is good point well made :)

With regard to gender differences in response to Heart Rate training, it would be an interesting study for someone to do.
I may be wrong, but the sheer percentage of women who I've worked with, who haven't fit the 'accepted' profile has been too large to be entirely cooincidence.
And the part of my brain that is still a Cardiac ITU nurse is fascinated by things like this :)

eL Bee!, following on from my point some pages back, with your background you could probably persuade a sample of women to let you tape ECG electrodes in the relevant places.

Whereas I'd probably get arrested.

Excuse me while I run around excitedly waving my arms in the air with a stupid grin on my face. Cancer Research - my first choice - have offered me a Golden Bond place for next year's VLM.

So I WILL be running the marathon next year, and I WILL do whatever I need to do to get round it in one piece.

Glenn, if you name me as co-author when the study is published, I'll do the electrodes. I've got relevant experience ...

Great new Rev - time to get preparing now !!!

Ive been enjoying the renewed posting and ideas on this thread these last few days. I maybe dont have the experience and knowledge of others but its great to read their thoughts and throw in my own personal experience.

On the fat burning point, I have found that while on the HADD training I have put weight on despite averaging 55-60mpw since May !!!

Bazo, I'll leave it to someone smarter than me to come up with the science, but it seems to be thought that as endurance training increases, the efficiency of the metabolism grows and you burn less energy over all.

So stop eating the cakes. ;-)

About This Thread

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
